I believe I remember that Halvor Taraldsen had a brother that emigrated to Amerika also, as recorded in an issue of Langs Lagen. I think his name was Hans. I tried years ago to locate him but with no luck. Halvor Taraldsen served in the Civil War under the name Albert Tarringsen. He donated the land for the Bagstevold Cemetery and was the first to be buried there. The church there was later moved into Erhard, MN. Recently a new church was built using the furnishings from the original church and the name changed to 'Grace Lutheran Church'. The cemetery name remains Bagstevold. Gerd also translated that the water at Bustul was not tasted first by the men accompanying the king and prince. So they must have trusted the people there. I have Gerd's book which she sent as a gift. |

Hi. I have tasted the water on Bustul.
Hans Taraldsen born 1827 emigrated 1872 to USA.
A sister Karen Eline Taraldsdatter 1835-86 married to Petter Hansen Åsen 1844-88 takes over Bagstevold. Bagstevold was sold out of the family 1962.
Halvor and Hans Taraldsens´s mother Åse Marie Torbjørnsdatter 1794-1841 was sister to my grandmother´s g.grandmother Synnøve Torbjørnsdatter Bagstevold 1796-1847.

Ilost mypassword to this site and recently was doing some research and see that so many people responded! Thank you. I ran a few things by my husband and he did confirm that the confusion between Christian and Carl and their ages (72 vs 90's) makes sense. He said that one of them actually died around 72 and the other lived up to 100 or close to that age. I am very interested inlearning as much as possible about my husband's family.
Question....how can you tell that he was born out of wedlock in the records (108?)?
Also, has anyone found information on Nettie Modahl? Thank you so much for all your help! My husband is the grandson of Carl Arthur Olson in Antelope Montana and we ive in Bigfork Montana. Nettie was his grandma. |

The 5th column reads Uægte, meaning illegitimate.

Ole Kittelsen Bustul is reported as being the father of the child. |

Hi everyone!
I was so excited to read about some of my ancestors on this site!
My great grandfather was Ole Olsen Ormetangen Sørby, born 1853. He sold Ormetangen in 1890 and bought Sørby farm in Sandsvaer.
His father was Ole Olsen Ormetangen, born 1799, brother of Kittil Olsen. He bought Ormetangen 1838.
His parents were Ole Torstensen Haugen and Margit Kittilsdatter Hvammen from Rollag.
I have read in the Sandsvaer books that Kittil Olsen married Sara Hansdatter Tofstad. Sara left for the US together with her two sons and their families in 1870. I suppose that your husband is a descendant of Sara and Kittil, Marilyn!
I live in Oslo but I will go to Raje tomorrow to see the "old places".
Thank you Kåre, for telling about the water at Bustul. I will try to taste it! One of my other ancestors was Halvor Olsen who was the first one to settle at Bustul
I wish l could buy Gerd Næss' "Seterdrift i Sandsvaer" but it has been sold out. Does anyone know how I could find a copy

Thank you for sharing and yes, Kittel and Sara are my husband's ancestors! You are so lucky that you get to go there! We would to go one day and if you are ever in montana, we are out by Glacier national Park! I wish I could get a copy of that book for my husband, too. How much are they? And is it in English? haha So you live in Norway? Wow! If you ever take pictures, could you email them to me? My husband was VERY close to his grandma Nettie (Modahl) Olson and misses her greatly. She traveled back and forth to Norway from Minnesota and her home here in Montana. I almost feel as though she must have thought of him today since recieving this all the way fromNorway on Thanksgiving! Sounds silly, but I do believe that! Please email me sometime! So what would you be in relation to my husband? Carl and Nettie are his grandma and grandpa Olson.

Hi again! I went to Raje, Marilyn. I will send you an email about the trip.
As to how we are related, I think it would be like this (thanks to all the good helpers on this site!):
- Kittil Olsen and my great great grandfather Ole Olsen Ormetangen were brothers. - Ole Kittilson and my great grandfather Ole Olsen Sørby were cousins - Christian A. Olson and my grand father Gustav Sørby were second cousins - Carl A. Olson and my mother Gudrun Sørby were/are third cousins - Conrad Olson and myself are fourth cousins - Scott Olson and my children, Vivi, Wendy and Alexander are fifth cousins
