Not only that but the birth record contains the name K Haugland as did the record for immigration through St Albans. I think that you have found the birth record for the Virginia, Minnesota Martin Davis (Davidson) and he is different from the Martin Norgren Davidson whom Tuilui is looking for.
I would be interested in how you were able to find that birth record. |

Hi,
No mystery there. Martin and Signe left through Bergen in 1911 and their birthplaces are recorded there. His was Haugland y Holmedal. Then it was just a matter of finding the records for Holmedal for 1876,

I am truly gratefull for the time and effort you people are putting into my "quest for the lost grandfather" I have ancestors on my grandmothers side that originates from Fjaler so maybe there will be a link to the other Martin anyway.
Still, Martin Norgren Davidsen disappeared in Boston in june 1912. I`m afraid he just changed his name and disappeared out of his time. There is also a possibility that something happened to him there, but if so there should be a death certificate or something, shouldn`t it?

A thank you all from me as well. As a new user, I learned a lot from you. I can say that I do not think I would ever have figured out that Martin Davis Davidsen/Davidson was Martin Kolbeinsen. I admit to thinking that Martin Norgren Davidsen was just covering his tracks. That clouded my opinions. It is good you were all there to straighted me out. I did get Signe right though it's too bad she is not the one we want. Here is an item of information that may confirm what most of you suspected or knew from the first time we read the comments on the Emigranter list of 1911 that he was in Norway for a visit after 15 years in America. It is the trip he went on 15 years prior, 23 April 1896, as Martin Kolbeinsen.

Hello everyone,
I realize this thread has been inactive for quite some time, but I wanted to post a reply here to say hello and see if anyone has found anything new.
Martin Norgren Davidsen is my 2nd great grand uncle. His brother, David Esaias Davidsen, is my 3rd great grandfather.

There's a family tree at familysearch.org that contains Martin and his siblings. One brother identified as Jans Davidsen moved to Brooklyn, New York, dying there in 1937. I was hoping for a better obit but this is what I found at the Old Fulton site from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 10 Jan 1937, pg A19 col 2:
"GREENWOOD LODGE ,NO.569
F&AM.—Brethren You are requested to attend thee
Masonic funeral services of our brother, JENS DAVIDSEN",
at his residence, 836 52d St.,
Sunday, January 10, at 8 p.m.
ALBERT P LOEWENSTEIN

Thank you for the reply. I do have a lot of records of Martin's family in my tree, which may be the tree you found on Family Search.
I have a page on Martin on http://the-richeys.com/martin-norgren-davidsen.
There is a great deal of information on his lineage there as well.

On one of the detective stories the other night an opinion was expressed, that people often change their names but seldom their date of birth...
His occupation in 1910 Norwegian census is tømmermand søfarende--seafaring carpenter? Perhaps he continued that occupation in US? |

Looking for an obituary found only a short abstraction of the information on his death certificate in the Boston Post, 5 July 1916, so no additional information obtained with which to confirm this Martin Davidson as your ancestor. So the facts from his d.c. show him as born in Norway, aged 38 and a carpenter with disposition of remains to Fairview (probably the cemetery in Suffolk county, Massachusetts.) |

It seems that this record is very likely to be for our Martin Norgren Davidsen. It wasn't a common name in Boston around the time period and I couldn't find anyone that it may have been for to exclude him.
I did look up the cemetery, though he isn't included in Find A Grave:
