I'm have trouble finding the parents of my great grandmother Christine. She was born in Norway in 1868 and emigrated to Minnesota in 1888 where she married Peter Olson Sjol. I found her maiden name listed on the death records of some of her children. Some list it as Sundby, some say Nordby and one says Christephersen. Peter was born in 1860 and emigrated in 1882-
If anyone can be any help I would greatly appreciate it.

Christine Sjol born Sunby born Feb. 23. 1850, died Oct. 30. 1924 married 1888 to Peter Olsen Sjol b. Jan. 2. 1860 d. Feb. 23. 1850 in Minnesota, 10 children.

Hi,

Here is Christina Sjol found in Minn. Historical Death index online:

SJOL, CHRISTINA
Date of Birth: na
Place of Birth: na
Mother Maiden Name: na
certid# 1923-MN-011694
Date of Death: 31 Oct 1923
County of Death: POLK

And apparently one of the children in the Minnesota Birth Index online:

Sjol, Clara Josephine
Date of Birth: 11 Sep 1910
Mother Maiden Name: Christopherson
certid# 1910-19911
County of Birth: Polk

If the birthyear of 1850 is correct we have to believe that a woman 60 years of age gave birth in 1910....

Hilsen,
Jackie M.

The complete Minnesota death certificate if sent for might have additional information.

1900 the family was in North Dakota. 1910 and 1920 in Polk Co., Minnesota. Church records of congregations they belonged to might also have information about her origins.

Hi,

Yes getting her actual death certificate may net parent's names even though mother's maiden name for Christina is not included in the online index.

The variations on the name mentioned are not necessarily mutually exclusive. In Norway, Christina would have been a Christophersdatter if her father was named Christopher. And the family could have lived at Sunby for a time and at Norby for a time and adopted the either farm name upon coming to America, or adapted their patronymic names, either after Christina's father or after her father's father's name.

These are from www.newslibrary.com...

ANNA RUD
Anna Rud, 101, Clearbrook, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, in the Good Samaritan Center, Clearbrook, where she had lived for the past two years.Anna Mathilde Sjol was born Oct. 5, 1898, the daughter of Peter and Christine (Norby) Sjol, in LaMoure County, N.D. She moved to Fosston with her family. She attended school in Fosston, and normal training in McIntosh, Minn. She married Christ Rud on May 17, 1919. Grand Forks Herald (ND) - January 10, 1989

OBITUARIES EDWIN SJOL
Edwin Sjol, 92, Fosston, died Friday, Jan. 6, 1989, in Fosston Municipal Nursing Home.Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Hope Lutheran Church, Fosston. Visitation will be there one hour before services. Arrangements are with Hoialmen Funeral Home, Fosston.Edwin Sjol was born Aug. 20, 1896, in Fort Ransom, N.D., the son of Peter and Christine Sjol. He grew up in Fosston. He married Clara Torgerson in 1925 in Fisher, Minn. He worked on the Great Northern Railway in Crookston,...

Some of the variation may also be the result of bad typos, or the informant not having accurate information to begin with. In particular the one in which the father is identified as "Sidney" also identifies her husband's name as "Gustay" which could be an unusual rendering of Gustav or Gustaf.

How was her name rendered on their marriage record?

Yes, I don't believe the birthdate of 1850 is correct- everything else there corresponds though. I looked into ordering a copy of the death certificate online but they require the parents names and since I don't know them I didn't continue. I also haven't found any marriage record. If you have suggestions on how to obtain those I thank you. I'm not sure where they got married, the oldest son lists being born in Minnesota on the censuses and the next oldest in North Dakota.
Sena's obituary has got her son's names confused with her father.
Thank you so much for taking the time to look those up.

I've never been asked to submit the parents names when I've ordered an uncertified Minnesota death certificate. Are you starting from the online index to those records? http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm?bhcp=1

Hopkins- thanks for that link, I was accessing some other on-line place that I found through a search engine. This morning I ordered both Christine and Pete's certificates. The marriage certificate is only available in 15 counties in the state and I don't think they ever lived in the ones listed. But maybe the death certificates will provide me with what I need.
Kaarto: What can I say but a heartfelt thanks. You have found things in six hours what I have not been able to find in six months. I am going right on to that family tree site and signing up. Thank you for the offer to assist, I may have to take you up on it.
To everyone else providing input- thank you all!

I believe I found her.
Pige Kristine Ingebretsdatter, Sundby moved out of Bjĝrke in Nannestad in April 1888, destination Amerika, see #2 under 1888.

Kristine was born May 19 1867, see #63, her parents were Ingebreth Larsen and Kari Christoffersdatter.
She was confirmated Oct 1881, see 7th record, she was then living at Sundby. (I read the birth place as Sundgaard.)

Kristines parents were married April 3 1867, see #5, Ingebret was 29 years old and his father was Lars Olsen, Sundbyeie and Kari was 26 years old, her father was Christoffer Gulliksen.
