Lawrence was born in 1847 in Norway. His parents may have been Gilbert and Osa. The census says he immigrated to the U.S. in 1872. He married Corinthia Reynolds in 1876. He died May 22, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland. I have been unsuccessful in finding him on any passenger list. I also have not been able to locate any documents showing how his name was spelled in Norway. I would greatly appreciate any leads anyone could give me. -Lynn Chapdelaine |

This person did not emigrate, but got married and later died in Hurdal... But I still believe you should be looking for a Laurits Guldbrandsen on a Rud farm...

FamilySearch shows Lawrence Rude as marrying Corinthia H. Reynolds 2 Dec 1875 in Richmond, Virginia. That record lists his father as Gilbert Rude and his mother as Aase Rude. His birth is listed as 1847 in "Ma." |

Lars Gulbrandsen, blacksmith left Oslo 1872, he was born 1847, see #4026. Lars from Nord Odal is a good candidate if we find when he moved to "Kristiania". Lars was a farmhand at Haug in 1865. No Lars Gulbrandsen found in the 1865 census for Christiania.

4 emigrants left for Elgin with the ship Albion in 1872. 3 of them were from Nord Odal, they were Andreas Amundsen and Marthea Amundsdatter from Rovilstad and Gorine Rovildstad.

Do you know if Lawrence Rude had any siblings? Lars Gulbrandsen Daffinrud had acc. the 1865 census for Daffinrud, Nord (Northern) Odal 4 brothers; Hans, Gunder; Peder and Jacob.
Laurits and Lars was often changed to Lawrence and Lewis and Gulbrand to Gilbert in USA. Osa is the same as Aase, todays Ċse.

Unfortunately I do not presently have any information on his siblings - Lars does seem like a really good possibility though. |

Hi. A summary of what we know about Lawrence Rude. The reason we call him Lars Gulbrandsen was the traditional naming practice in Norway, Gulbrandsen means he was Gulbrands son.
There were and still are a huge number of farms that ends with the Rud name in Norway, one of them was Daffinrud, named Dagfinrud in the 1900 census. The origin of Rude means to clear the land, this farm is named after Daffin/Dagfinn, probably the first settler on Daffinrud.
Lawrence Rude was born Ma. 1847, parents Gilbert and Osa Rude.
We can assume Lawrence was Laurits or Lars, Gilbert was Gulbrand and Osa was Aase.
Thousands of emigrants were not recorded, it was a great migration from Odal to Christiania/Oslo, the1872 emigrant from Oslo seems promising .
There were no Lars Gulbrandsen born in Odal acc. the 1900 census for Norway.
One sholud never say never, but the chance that there were two Lars Gulbrandsen (Daffin) Rud born March 1847 with parents Gulbrand (Gilbert) and Aase Rud is almost like zero.
