Here is a candidate for Lars Egeland. He is travelling with his wife Marie and daughter Bertha. They are coming from Hoiland and going to Punxsutawney ( I assume Pensylvania). Bertha is about 1 year old. Just above this family is a Bertha Egeland age 27 and Thobille Aasen age 21 both females from Thrine and also going to Pennsylvania.

Name: Lars Egeland
Arrival Date: 16 May 1892
Birth Year: abt 1870
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Hamburg
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Suevia

This is probably the same family in 1920. No Bertha, maybe she is old enough to have left home. This county is next to the county where Punxsutawney is located in. I have not found them in the 1900 US Census.

Here is the family in th 1900 Census with Bertha. Why the census taker put the name down as Lar as Egeland instead of Egeland, Lars we will probably never know. Only difference between this man and your Lars is the birth years. You have March 1868 and this Lars put down March 1870. Also he is married to Ingeborg Marie whereas you do not have a wife listed.

Name: Egeland Laras
Home in 1900: Perry, Jefferson, Pennsylvania
[Perry, Jefferson, Pennsylvania]
Age: 30
Birth Date: Mar 1870

Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1892
Relationship to head-of-house: Head
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Spouse's Name: Ingborg M Laras
Marriage year: 1889
Marital Status: Married

Did Hanna Martea use the Tjøsvold name in USA?
It was her mother Gjertrud Gurine Hansdatter b. 1849 that was from Tjøsvold (parents Hans Jørgen Matiasen and Sissel Gabrielsdatter Tjøsvold).
Hannas father Peder Johan Pedersen b. 1859 was from Tangjerd.
Hanna Martea Pedersdatter born on Tangjerd August 24. 1886, see down page #23

She also lived on Tangjerd when 1. born daughter Margit was born March 30. 1909, see down page #10

Hannas siblings;
- Petra Gjertine 1889-1897
- Sigvard Johan 1891, takes over the farm, married Martha Jacobsen, 9 children born between 1915-36
- Peder Gustav 1894-1900.

In 1930 Bertha is married with her own family, however mother Marie is living with them so I assume Lars is deceased at this point.

Well it may be that I have the wrong Lars Egeland. A Family Tree on Ancestry.com identifies the father of this Lars Egeland as

Søren Larsson Snorrestad
Birth 03.01.1843inTime, Rogaland, Norway
Death 18.09.1930inFoss-Eikeland, Rogaland, Norway

If that is correct than this is probably not your Lars.

Hi,

None of these folks will be found at Ellis Island as their dates are too early. If they landed at New York it would be at a place called Castle Garden, which has its own searchable web page.

I don't have the address right now but if you google castle garden it will most likely find it.

My Norwegian emigrant ancestors who settled in the areas near Eagle Grove (Wright Co.), Story and Humboldt counties Iowa arrived through the Canadian port of Quebec.

My spouse's Scandinavian emigrant ancestors who settled in the state of Pennsylvania arrived through the port of Philadelphia.

There were many different possible ports of arrival in North America for European emigrants.
