O Cool! And thanks for this effort!

Do any on forum know if the 4 little flags are signifying something or if there was artistic license applied to them. Likewise is there any message in the quartering of the Norwegian flag?

Looks like it's under glass, so probably not an oil painting, more likely water color or gouache, probably on paper. The treatment of the people is fairly sticklike, and water is basic, so obviously the detail on the ship is what's important. No signature seen, but might still be there under closer inspection.

A neat detail (or is it a trick in my eye?) a seal in the big wave at the front of the boat. And would it be the captain with the spyglass aft of ship? Nine or ten crew visible. Calligraphic title.

The back will probably be sealed with paper but might still have framer's label. Frame is plain wood.

So cool.

But who would have had this painted? The captain or the company? And how did it come to be in America?

Always more mystery...

Jackie M.

The upper left corner of this old Norwegian flag is called "sildesalaten" ("the salmagundi") , and was introduced by King Oscar I in 1844.
The salmagundi was in the Norwegian merchant flag 1844–1899 and in the naval and royal flag until 1905. All swedish flags had this sign in the period 1844–1905.

The 4 flags at the top are International Signal Flags.

Some signals are sent with a single flag. Urgent and important signals are two flag signals. General signals are three flag signals.
Geographical, alphabetic spelling tables, and vessel numbers are sent with four flags.

Sorry, its HSVM.
Not sure what it stand for, but some kind of identification of the ship.
This was before wireless radio became common.

Sorry to take us off topic but it's not everyday that the word "salmagundi" gets used:

Can anyone help me understand what the headings on the parish birth records from around 1844 translate to in English?

I am now trying to find out the date of birth and death of Oleane Mather Olsen and Christian Olsen. I can see that Oleana's birth last name was Enger but I have had no luck finding any further information. Oliane and Christian are parents to Carl Bernard Olsen (C.B.).

Hi Tina,

Hopkins included a web address for a page which has English translations of the parish register page headings, earlier in this topic.
