Looking for Marie Olsen born 22 Jan 1863 in Hallingdal in Hol Norway. Her mother's name was Ingeborg. She was one of 7 or 8 children. A sister was named Ingeborg also. She came to American in 1890 or 91. I have also seen the Myhre name attached to her, but I don't know if it indeed belongs to her family. She came to America it is believed with an Ole Swenby who shows up in church records here as the father of her 4 children. It is believed he had a second family here in America before her. Specifically wondering on the origin of the Myhre name, would like to see the ship log of when she actually came over and if indeed with Ole and if any of her family ever came to America. This seems huge to ask and I will be grateful for any clues. Thanks! Vicky King |

Hi Vicky,
Hol is "my" neighborhood...
OK where did you get the birthdate information? The reason I ask is that the birth on 22 Jan 1863 in the Aal church register is for a Margit Olsdatter, #12, right hand page which see:
Source information: Buskerud county, Ål, Parish register (official) nr. I 6 (1849-1864), Birth and baptism records 1863, page 309. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1149&idx_id=1149&uid=ny&idx_side=-360
This Margit's mother is Ingeborg and this Margit does have a sister named Ingeborg. And this Margit is one sibling of 8.
This Margit is not listed among the migrants from Hol in the Hol bygdebøker. (Margit has a sister Guri who did migrate but even the destination for her isn't known. Curious...) And in the baptismal register her farm of birth is "Larsgaardeie". The actual name of the her parent's place was "Hytteplassen" under søre Larsgård.
No farm in Hol was named Swenby so perhaps she knew Ole from someplace else and maybe picked up Myhre there. Don't get me wrong there are lots of farms with myhre as part of their name in Hol, so would require more research.
Would be most curious for a few more details on Marie's life in America.

No Marie is recorded as born Jan 22 1863 in Hol. A Margit Olsdatter is found, see #6 from bottom of right page. Her parents were Ole Asgrimsen and Ingeborg Evensdatter at Larsgaardseie. Kildeinformasjon: Buskerud fylke, Hol, Ministerialbok nr. 1 (1850-1870), Fødte og døpte 1863, side 47-48. Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1092&idx_id=1092&uid=ny&idx_side=-26
The 1865 census shows that Margit had a sister Ingebør (Ingeborg) as her mother, if that is what you mean by "A sister was named Ingeborg also". http://digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=51&filnamn=f60619&gardpostnr=761&personpostnr=4586&merk=4586#ovre.
No record found of emigration to Amerika, but Margit moved out of Hol to Kristiania (Oslo) in 1890, see #4 in 1890 Kildeinformasjon: Buskerud fylke, Hol, Ministerialbok nr. I 3 (1887-1918), Utflyttede 1889-1892, side 371. Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=4173&idx_id=4173&uid=ny&idx_side=-330. |

Thank you all for your speedy replies. I am overwhelmed. I do believe Margit is Marie due to Hol and the correct birthdate. I did not know she left Hol and moved to Kristiana in 1890, but that makes sense since she left there to come to America in 1891. She ended up in Wisconsin. I hope I can find the ship registry and see who she came over with. The family story is a man named Ole Olson/ Swenby convinced Marie's parents he would make a good husband and had a house in LaCrosse, WI. Marie apparently then made the move to America only to find there was no house in LaCrosse and at some point she discovered he had another family in Menomonie, WI. She had 4 children with Ole and the church records show Marie Olsen and Ole Swenby as parents. Ole was in and mostly out of their lives and she attempted to raise the children. It was hard and at one point my grandfather, Oscar Olsen went to live with the Hagen family in Minnesota. Rumor has it Marie always hoped to get him back, but the Hagen's having only daughters needed a boy for the farm. I have tried to find the correct Ole Swenby ( after all, being my grandpa's biological dad he would be my great grandfather.) Also, I don't understand the Myhre name - where that comes from - Marie's family? Ole's family? There are quite a few Ole Swenby's and without a birthdate connected to him it is difficult to be sure I have the right one. I was hoping maybe the ship records would help.

Hi Vicky,
Margit had a child shortly before she took off to America, Olaf, #4:
Kildeinformasjon: Buskerud fylke, Hol, Ministerialbok nr. I 3 (1887-1918), Fødte og døpte 1890, side 14. Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=4173&idx_id=4173&uid=ny&idx_side=-17
This baby also died near the time she left as well. #7 upper half of page: Source information: Buskerud county, Hol, Parish register (official) nr. I 3 (1887-1918), Death and burial records 1891, page 312. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=4173&idx_id=4173&uid=ny&idx_side=-282

You mentioned Margit's sister Ingeborg, here is a little about her from the Folk og Fortid i Hol
Volume IV, page 395: #3 Ingebjørg Olsdtr.b.6 Oct 1859 married 1st to widower Sjugurd Helgeson Brattakerbøkko who was born in 1829, married 2nd Ola Asleson Smedsplass in Holet, he was born 1862 and had the Smedsplass.
Volume III, page 835: Ola Asleson Smedsplassen born 1862 died 6 May 1922 married widow Ingebjørg Olsdtr Hytteplassen Brattakerbøkko she born 6 Oct 1859 d.1941. They had 5 boys.
Brattakerbøkko is the farm that Margit's child Olaf was born on according to his funeral record. Ingeborg was also one of faddernes (godmother) to Margit's child Olaf.

Vicky,
You apparently have the church register of the births of the 4 children Margit had with Ole Swenby... Who were the faddernes, the godparents, of the children? Sometimes these are relatives and knowing the names can help sort the right connections to other family.
It's some distance from Wisconsin to Ottertail County, Minnesota, how did Marie come to be there in Ottertail or know that the Hagens needed a son for the farm work?
