Jackie, this is probably the couple in the 1870 US Census. Looking at the original the name is clearly Olson not Hanson but?

The HeritageQuest picture of this page is incredibly illegible. The word behind Christian's relationship to Harry is not the word "other" but something else--can you read?

Here is a link (if all goes well) to the Homestead Entry of Harry Hanson in Moody County. It's dated in 1882 and it is an actual homestead entry so the packet (spendy though it is-$40-ouch) is likely to contain much information about his farming operation and may even mention all the people in the household....
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?accession=SDMTAA 072127&docClass=SER&sid=uxah0auz.myw
(You will probably have to cut and paste the entire address in to get to the actual online recording of Harry Hanson's homestead--doesn't seem to work just clicking it.) |

Great-- a source! But is it the actual register or from the online database, or somewhere else? |

Sorry for the mix up with the 1900 Census, but it looks like you've found a lot of info in the U.S. That's great! I've run into many problems with Family Tree's on Ancestry, because they don't always show sources, which seems silly, since they can get the source on Ancestry and just link it.
Jackie, how much info is given in the Homestead packets? Info that couldn't be gotten elsewhere, since it is a steep price?
Kåre - very interesting about the vaccination year. I will have to look into that for other birthdates that I have different in the U.S. versus their Norwegian birth/baptism record in the parish records. |

Homestead packets for the original entries typically have lots of information, usually interesting and valuable, easy to justify the cost. If it was a "cash sale" , not so much and hard to justify the cost, contain probably not more information than what's on the single page patent which are gradually being added to the BLM website.
In order to take a homestead, if you were not a US citizen, you had to have filed your 1st papers--the Declaration of Intention [to become a citizen]. You were not required to complete the naturalization and become a citizen in order to take the homestead.
A restatement of the declaration, usually at least the date you applied and where are included in the packet.
Getting to the Declaration --in the era of the 1870s -1880s--can be valuable because the declaration often contains (not always!) the month and year of arrival and the port of arrival in US.
There are exceptions to the Declaration requirement if a father had become a citizen then at certain times by regulations then in play their progeny automatically became citizens, too--sort of family style family plan!
Since Harold didn't make it to the 1900 census and subsequent censuses to be asked the question about migration dates, citizenship status etc, the declaration found via the homestead packet may be the only time he himself answers the question.
The Declaration could be filed anywhere, did not have to even be the county where the homestead was taken.
The packet also may contain information on the conduct of the farming operation, numbers of acres "broken" year by year, bushels produced of which grains, numbers of livestock, size of house built and some of it's characteristics (frame, stone, the like). Affidavits from at least two neighbors reporting that they'd seen the applicant farming everyday, etc. There is usually also a copy of a newspaper clipping stating the dates published and the paper published in announcing that so-and-so is proving up and inviting complaints that the person hasn't followed regulations (this requirement was useful to the newspaper industry as a source of revenue) So these are very useful bits of information.
Regulations of the homestead programs did change through the years so these may or may not apply to your ancestor's homestead.
There are a number of online database indexes to naturalization records themselves. North Dakota has an index online, South Dakota does too. The database for Minnesota's is available at the Iron Range Interpretive Center's web page in addition to on Ancestry. And the Declaration could also be filed in a Federal court too. So lots of places to look. |
