Three pictures to show the approximate location of the Mikkelsveen farm where Martin Matson was born.
The farm does not exist today.

You're all absolutely amazing. I don't have the words to express how grateful I am to everyone who has taken the time to research and post their findings. Thank you!!

Jan Peter, thank you for the photos and maps - it is amazing to me to see where the family came from. I'd love to visit some day!

You're welcome. It's hard to pinpoint the exact location of the farm, since it doesn't exist anymore. You'll have to be a local to know it more precise, but I'm confident it's very close to what I've shown above.

I was hoping to find a trace of Thora among Martin's siblings, but no luck with that....

From what I understand Thora was a cousin. I believe she was still living 20 years ago, although I can't be positive, but my grandma had spoken about cousin Thora in Norway.

So if I am getting this right from the records, then Asbjørn Stueløkken was technically born Asbjørn Syversen, but used the name of the family farm as his surname?

I am curious about the farm names. I noticed Martin's family had Mikkelsveen and Martin's great grandfather was named Lars Mikkelsen, which probably means his dad's name was Mikkel. Is it the original owner of the farm that the name comes from? And would it cease to exist if the farm was sold and be re-named by the new owner?

The ending -Sveen is very common in Norway.
The origin is the old word Svidja which neams "Svi av" burn.
The first settlers cleared the land by fire.

Mikkel gave name to Mikkelsveen, he was the firts settler who cleared the land for farming by fire.
Ash was good fertilizer for the first crops.

Dal in Dalsveen means valley.

Maybe Mikkelsveen has become a larger farm now named Mikkelenga.

There are a lot of "- Svea" (- Sveen) - farms in this area.

Thanks, everyone! I found an online book that inlcuded Peder Knudsen and Kari Torstensdatter, Skougseie and their families.

I believe they are not my Mathias Pedersen's parents as it listed their son as marrying a woman named Gudbjør Olsdatter and they didn't have a son named Martinus.

Thanks again for all your help!

Back to searching I go! :D
