Thank you very much for the further information. It's getting nearer to our current times (and to living people).

Perhaps her mother's death and father's remarriage contributed to Nicoline's decision to emigrate to NZ. There would not be much reason to stay behind in Norway, and this provides a possible explanation for emigration.
When she arrived in New Zealand she married a much older man and had a son (Gustav Lowe). This man was unfortunately committed to a mental hospital and died there years later. Meanwhile, she and baby Gustav lived with another man (A.B. Newman) and had 8 further children including my grandfather. Newman was a farmer who married her 2 years before she died of typhoid in Gisborne Hospital aged 40. He described her as "my adored Nicoline".

You are welcome.
I was also thinking of that Nicoline left because her father married again.
There could be many reasons for that.
Both the 1872 and -73 journey with ship Hĝvding (Chief) was paid for by the N.Z. authorities, a one way ticket.
They wanted Scandinavians to settle, most of the passengers on Hĝvding, 372, were Norwegians.

Reaching the "70 miles bush" later called Norsewood (Norwegian wood), many were shocked, it was just forest and scrub as far as the eye could see, but it was to late to repent so they started to clear land.

and more Norsewood information here

Hi - please do let me know if you come across any more records for the family members noted here, or tips and links. The photos and Wiki info about Norwegian towns and churches is so interesting. Cheers

A daughter Kristine b. on Smertu (Smerturuud)1866 married steward (seaman) August Hansen b. 1853 in Fredrikshald (Halden) in Gleminge Marc 8. 1896.
Bjelkehugger Ole Lauritsen still lived, he and seaman Gustav Olsen, both from Smertu, were bestmen (column 10), #11

August Hansen was still steward when a son Aksel Kristian was bap. June 10. born April 2. 1900 in Fredrikstad, but in the 1900 census from Fredrikstad August Hanssen is rec. as sawmill worker.
Family search tells that Mimi Kathinka b. 1898 was bap. in Finnmark County (Northern Norway)
If that is correct August sailed on ship along the Norwegian coast.

The family in Fredrikstad 1900

More interesting info thank you

One thing I don't understand is the following info posted:

"Family search tells that Mimi Kathinka b. 1898 was bap. in Finnmark County (Northern Norway)
If that is correct August sailed on ship along the Norwegian coast."

Does this mean Mimi Kathinka was that another daughter of August ?

The 1909 trip to Californa must have been a short trip if he did not had a namesake in Fredrikstad.

1910 Karl Oscar on farm Bjĝlstad, master on a dredging barge.
The date ?? August 1872 correspond born on Krċkerĝy.
The island Krċkerĝy belonged to Glemmen parish and farm Smertu was on Krċkerĝy.
Inga was born 1868 acc. the marriage record.
Both children had lastname Olsen Lund, link

This Gustav was not the one who was age 14 born in Lier in the 1865 census.
He was Nicolines half brother from Ole Lauritsens 2. marriage born in Glemminge 1875.
Sorry if it confused you.

I do not know what happened to Gustav Olsen born July 14. 1852.

It's so interesting! Could you please advise, is it possible to find where the farms are located where family resided in the 19th century? e.g.:

Farm Lian-eie, Lier (Maren Kristine and Ole Lauritsen's residence when married in 1848)

Smertugruud, (where they lived in Fredrikstad and Maren Kristine dies in 1871)

Farm V (Western) Forrisdal, Rakkestad (where Nicolai Valentin died in 1884)

(Google Street View shows "Markveien 60, Fredrikstad" - small street - where Anette Wold lived in 1910)
