I KNOW my grandfather - Martin P. Hogseth (born 1862) - immigrated from Norway around 1879-80, and settled in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, USA; he died there in June 1944. I think he came through the port of Philadelphia. Without success, I have exhausted my attempts to find any records on his immigration, including passenger lists or dates. Being new and inexperienced to this type of geneological search, I would be very thankful for any assistance. My email is stevehogseth@yahoo.com. Thanks much!! Steve Hogseth |

Lots of things could figure in your dilemma:
The name Hogseth could be rendered several different ways in Norwegian. Perhaps your man travelled under his patronymic name rather than the farm name Hogseth.
Did Martin ever become naturalized? Usually in the early 1880s era a declaration of intention to become a citizen contained information about the month/ year of arrival and which US Port was the entry point.
What parish is Martin's Norwegian home? Checking the 1865 census online at the digitalarkivet finds Hogset (no h) in 2 parishes, Urskaug and Nedre Stjordalen. There is a Martin Kristenson age 1 in one of the Urskaug listings. Is that your man?

I doubt that it has been 6-7 hours since I posted my initial request, and logging in now I have found nine replies! I am very grateful to all who replied. I believe Jan has given me some information that might lead me to where I want to go. Some FACTS to answer some of the questions within all your replies: Martin was born in 1862; the family farm was near Elverum. He did marry Maren Tandberg (immigrated to USA in1888) on Feb 1890. Martin became a USA citizen in 1892. My father Walter (1906-1998) was 11th of 13 children, 8 of whom survived to adulthood. I may be contacting some of you individually if that is OK. Again, my direct email is stevehogseth@yahoo.com. I very much appreciate everybody's help! Thanks again! Steve |

The record for Ole Pedersen and Berthe Olsdatter leaving Norway shows them each to still be single. You'd have to look to American records to find that marriage information. Most likely place to look - in the area of Black River Falls. Use your US resources research skills.

Carpenter Ole Pedersen Hogseth b. 1852 & girl Berthe Olsdr Solberg b. 1858 Marriage 27 SEP 1878, Elverum, Hedmark His father: Peder Johnsen Her father: Ole Hanssen
I'm not convinced that Ole & Berthe emigrated. This could be them at Hogset nordre farm in Census-1900 for Elverum, Hedmark.
