Kare Yes, you are right that Mons Pederson was from Reed farm and Brite Ingelbrigtstadder was possibly from Dale farm - it said "Sotre"? I found two marriage records of their parents. Peder Thorsen - Rheed and Agnetha Arnesdatter - Rheed were married on November 29, 1829 Ingelbrigt Johanessen and Ane Johanesdtr were married on December 10, 1820. It did not say where they came from. You suspected that they were from Dale. Peder Thorsen's father was Thore Davidsen Agnetha Arnesdatter's father was Arne Brywild? cannot read Ingelbrigt and Ane - I could not figure who their fathers were - (Niels Jacobsen? and Ingelbret Kaale?) |

I`ll take a better look tomorrow, its getting late in Norway.
Brywild was probably Brynild, Arne Brynildsen ? Dale was also two farms in 1865, I have more info to share with you from Dale.
Ingelbret Kaale was probably Ingebrecht Hanssen age 18 on farm Kaale 1801
There were no rules for naming, Engelbrigt is spelled in numerous variations
There were 4 Kaale farms and 3 subfarms in Gloppen in 1801.

There were two Dale farms in 1865, both farms had nr 79 in 1890, total 15 people lived on the two farms in 1890.
These farms owned a summer pasture where a servant maid or the daughter/daughters lived the whole summer with the cattle, goats or sheep. They made butter and cheese which a servant boy or the sons brought down to the farm. This periode where the girls had the full responsibility for the production was the time they liked best in the year. They moved up as soon as the grass was ok and stayed there until the autumn. From Dale it took ca one hours walk.
This summer pasture is named Dalestĝylen link
Today its used as a summer recidence for vaccation.

Hi Kare or someone I collected a lot of information on Dale (Reed) and Valaker lately. One thing I do not get satisfied with is Mons Pedersen Reed (1843-1900). Where did he get his last name - Dale from. He named his youngest son, Ingebrigt Andreas Monsen Dale, born May 2, 1880. Mons had three children before Mons. Peder Monsen Kvile born Apr. 28, 1872, Agnete Thorine Monsensdatter Kvile born Dec. 18, 1873 and Agnete Thorine Monsendatter Reed born Feb. 19, 1876. Kvile, Reed and Dale - three different last names?. Mons' parents were Peder Thorsen Reed and Agnete Arnesdatter Reed. Mons' wife was Brithe Ingebrigtsdatter Overseater. I cannot figure out. I looked at Mons' father, Peder Thorsen Reed who died in 1849. Mons was six years old and had four brothers, Arne, Thor, Rasmus and David. Was he adopted by the Dale parents - Joannes Ellingsen Dale and Agnete Hansdatter Kaale? Remember Johannes and Agnete's son, Mathias Johannesen Dale born June 28, 1878. Why did Mathias and Ingebrit (Engle) live closely in America? Maybe you can give me a better answer. thanks, Ted Dale/Reed - Briem, Gloppen, Sogn og Fjordane and Valaker - Intivek, Innivek, Sogn og Fjordane |

Reed and Kvile; That means that Mons Pedersen and Britte Ingebrigtsdatter lived on Kvile when Peder 1872 and Agnete Thorine was born 1873 and they settled down on Reed before 1876 when a. 2. Agnete Thorine was born. We can assume that Agnete Thorine 1873 died young.

A person who moved from farm to farm in Norway in those days renamed after the farm he lived on.
Not common, most siblings was born on the same farm, but even siblings who emigrated could change to dif. last name in America. Not unusual that a person took lastname after a farm that ment something exstra for him/her like here for Dale, Reed and Kvile.
During the civil war if your name was Olsen in the 15th of Wisconsin (ca 1/3 of the soldiers had lastname Olsen in the 15th) you were recommended to change your lastname, some took the name of the farm they came from, others changed to the grandparents farm or a farm that had ment some exstra for you.

Mons Pedersen lived on Reed when he was confirmated Nov. 1.1857, see #3 His grades was "Meget godt" Very good.
I am nor sure but I belive he was taken care of by his brother Arne born 1830 who already was married and had one or two daughters, Agnete 1854 and Thora 1857, see the 1865 census for Reed above.
Having a tailor in the house had to be a great advantage both economic and practical.
