Maybe you could write to that person and point out the error. Somehow that person has Anna Guttormsen Solheim on his/her family tree, so it's worth connecting with him/her in any case.

1940 US Census
Passaic, Passaic, New Jersey
Philip Meltzer 44 born about 1896 in Russia
Anna Meltzer 44 born about 1896 in Russia
Louis Meltzer 21 born in New Jersey
Max Meltzer 15 born in New Jersey

It would be Ancestry.com, it was an automatic link that came up. Probably no one individual would be able to make corrections for this. As my mother says, "shift happens", I thinks this applies here. I appreciate all of your expertise ladies.

Oh I misunderstood, thought some person had listed that information on their family tree. Sorry for the confusion.

Ancestry.com generates "hints" pointing you to records that might pertain to your family. This is a service made available through the wizardry of the Ancestry.com search engine (just clarifying that it's not a problem in the category your mother mentioned). Only a human being can scrutinize a "hint" to see if in fact that record does apply to one's own family member. Don't know if this helps, but anyway I'll mention that on the Ancestry menu bar on the top of the page you'll see "Learning Center" as one option. Lots of good info there about how it all works. On another topic - I hate to dump on you but - fyi not all the researchers are women. It's also possible some of the women aren't ladies, but that's another story...

Yep, you got it. Appreciate you mentioning this issue on the menu bar. I am in the process of checking to see if the entries I have made in the Casper Family Tree are going to be entered into the main ancestry.com site. With the information you both have provided for me, I have been able to piece together quite a good sized family tree. Hopefully it will transfer over to the main site. Thanks to you both!

So this is the woman in question, looks like she got remarried and was going by the name Marie Nihleen. Is that correct? I knew Rolph Casper, who was my uncle. Could this possibly be the same individual mentioned in the application?

There are quite a few Ralph Caspers in New York. When was your uncle born? We may be entering an area of research now that might be helped by you asking older family members about all this. They might have information about your uncle Ralph Caspers that could tie him to Marie Nilheen.

You ask: Have we found Anna Marie Charlotte Guttormsen?

Birth record found by Jan Peter (page 2 of this thread): Anna Marie Charlotte Guttormsen, Solheim b. 4 June 1872
This is the same birth date and same birth place as given by Marie Nihleen in her US passport application.

Anna Marie Charlotte Guttormsen, Solheim's family members mention the name Marie Nilheen on their immigration records

Many Scandinavians use a middle name as a "calling" name (including both my parents). Anna Marie could easily go by "Marie."

In the US census records Marie Nihleen lives in 1910 in the same town as the rest of the clan from Norway.

Also in the 1910 census Marie Nihleen's mother Ellen Guttormsen b 1833 in Norway lives with her. Anna Marie Charlotte Guttormsen's mother was Ellen Guttormsen (married name) born about same year in Norway.

Also, a search was done for Anna Marie Charlotte Guttormsen in Norway and she was not found there.

So yes, this is enough for us to strongly believe Marie Nihleen is Anna Guttormsen. A document showing Marie's maiden name would confirm this - her marriage certificate, daughter's birth record, or her death record.

1900 US Census
Manhattan, New York, New York

Anton Nihleen, spouse Marie Nihleen, 86 Mountain av, occupation shoes

DEATH RECORD, Rosa, as found on Family Search website
Given Name: Rosa
Middle Name: M

Many more records for this couple on Ancestry.com. Lots of traveling.

It is actually Rolf, born in 1896. I always thought his name was spelled Rolph Casper though.

Well, let's see. Here's information Jan Peter previously posted about "your" Rolf:

Emigration from Oslo on 06 Jun 1913
Gulbrand Kaspersen, married, coachman, born 16 Jul 1857, residence: Klingenberggt. 12 III, Oslo, destination: New York. To son.
Ragna Gustava Kaspersen, married, born 19 Sep 1862
Rolf Gulbrand Kaspersen, electrician, born 26 Jul 1896
Hans Peter Kaspersen, born 06 Aug 1899

Now after you've given the name of your uncle as "Rolf Casper, born 1896," I searched Ancestry.com using that name and found the information below.

===============================================

1918 World War I service record for Rolf G. Casper born 24 July 1896, born in Christiania, address is 406 East 57th Street, Manhattan, New York

Death Record
Name: Sgt Rolf G Casper
Birth Date: 24 Jul 1896
Age at Death: 76
Death Date: 17 May 1973
Burial Place: Leonardo, Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA

World War II -Draft Registration Cards, 1942 [Ancestry.com]
Name: Rolf Gulbrand Casper
Birth Date: 24 Jul 1896
Birth Place: Norway
Residence: Bergen, New Jersey

===============================================

So yes, all the above look like one person.
Whether "Rolf" is "Ralph" on the passport application of Marie, I don't know. I do know when I spotted that surname Casper, that seemed like a Caspersen who had shortened his name.

The birth date and birth place are the same, he immigrated to New York. My mom thinks he lived in New Jersey, and died in New Jersey. My mother (Elizabeth Ann Casper) said that she thinks he had a bar in New Jersey. I can ask my Uncle Norman too, he was older than my mother, he remembers more than she does about all of this.

He and his brother came over with his mother in June 1913. He is the individual in those documents above, as well
