It's a two step process be sure to get both the 1st and 2nd papers. The first papers, depending on when filed, will likely give the port of arrival in US and a month and a year date. Could be filed anywhere Cornelius lived. When he completed the procedure is not known. The 1900 census usually has an answer for that but Cornelius' 1900 census taker missed the mark.

A very interesting candidate.
Do I understand correctly there is no church book for 1845?
The birth of the sister Larine in 16 Nov 1857, baptized 01 Jan 1858 gives the parents as Jens Thomas Corneliusen and mother Laurene Hansd, Hæsnesøen:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?urnread_imagesize=full&info=ingen&hode=nei&show=80&uid=174712&js=j

Same parents for Jens, born 21 Feb 1855, baptized 29 April: Jens Thomas Corneliusen and mother Laurene Hansd, øtre Hæsnesø (spelling?)

The church books for Fjære seems to be uncomplete, but borders between Fjære (merged with Grimstad) and other parish`s changed many times over the years so perhaps/hopefully Cornelius Jensen is mentioned in church books from other parish`s .

Nearby on Hæsnesøen, possible sisters to Jens?
* Christiane Corneliusdatter f 1826, widow, w son Cornelius Tellefsen f 1855
* Christine M. Corneliusdatter f 1825 at Fjære, husband Reinhirts Andersen.
* Karen K. Corneliusdatter f 1822 at Fjære, husband Carl J. Vold

In 1865 Jens T. Corneliusen occupation is "Gaardbruger, Selveier, Lods" ; I think lods is some kind of sea-related job. But anyway Cornelius's occupation of matros is of interest as it is a seaman's job title. Since we can't find him immigrating, it is possible that (maybe) he could have gone to USA as a seaman. This father also does farming, which fits with Cornelius in Maryland.

The farm Hesnæsøen is named after an island with the same name and could feed 2 big cattle, a pig and cultivate 2 barrels of potatoes in 1865.
"Lods" Pilot, the fathers income came from guiding ships.

I posted Cornelius Jensen on my candidates post earlier in the topic He is #5 the post in on the first page. There was a fire and vast amounts of Fjære church books were destroyed including both Cornelius' time of baptism as well as his time of confirmation.

It would have to be found if his father had an estate or dødfallsprotokol to see if there is some kind of connection.

Here is a death record for a person who might possibly be the same Cornelius Jensen. If so then he probably never left Norway. Also he might have died before the 1900 Census.
Web: Norway Burial Index, DIS-Norge, 1700-2010
Name: Cornelius Jensen
Death Date: 10 Mar 1900
Burial Place: Grimstad, Aust-Agder, Norway
Age: 55
Birth Date: 23 Jan 1845

Bummer. Any other Cornelius Johnsons in that death database? Never mind I looked again and see its gravminner.

Hi...i've posted info before about my great great grandfather Cornelius Johnson. I was one of of the many it seems to be researching the wrong Cornelius.

I have a question about his naturalization papers....my daughter and I found a record of notice of his intent to become a U. S. citizen in 1890 and then we found the record of his actually becoming a citizen in 1892....both records filed with the Baltimore City, Maryland courts...no info on either about his arrival port of origin.

Would this info usually be located on these records?

Usually, in the 1890 era a month and year of arrival and name of port of arrival are included in the Declaration of Intention (the first step). Was the item you found an index to the naturalization records or the actual record?

It's kind of ironic that this topic came up today. I just got back home from a visit to Maryland a couple of hours ago! Very lovely state...

Looking over the previous posts, it looks like we looked at the lot of Cornelius Johnsons, but did not generate a matching candidate. I wonder if his name was truly Cornelius in Norway or if it was something peculiarly Norwegian beginning with C or K which he adapted to Cornelius once he got to US? Say, Kjøstel, Kåre or something?

What we found was the actual record...will have to go back and see if we can find the index to the records...

Maryland is a very good place to live ;)

We were wondering if maybe his name was different in Norway before he came here...will have to go through passenger list and seaman lists again to see if we can find him that way...paying closer attention to all k or c names..checking using birthdates and arrival ports...maybe something will click..

Thanks for the help ;)

No need to look for an index. I was thinking that you maybe had the index to the record which might have less information than the full record,
