My ancestor's name includes "Kleven under Askilt" at the end of her name. What exactly is this referring to ? I think Kleven is a town/community and as you indicated it is now Klevia ......but on the map you sent the village/town of Askilt is also evident .......why would she have both attached to her name ? |

Both Kleven and Askilt were farms. Kleven under Askilt means that Kleven was a sub farm under Askilt.
Enter this map write Askilt , click on SĜK, click on "Askilt, Bĝ (gard(gardsbruk))" and see the farm.
Not sure if Kleven exist any more as a farm, it was a crofters farm spelled Kleiva under farm nr 1 Askilt in 1900. Kleven/Kleiva means Steep slope

Thanks again Hopkins. I'm not finding Gunhild Nilsdatter Kleven under Askilt in the 1801 census. Reportedly she was born in 1795 so should show under the census of 1801.. If I were to search in a local parish to Kleven under Askilt, for a DOB, where would you suggest starting ? Many of the parish records for that district (Buskerud) don't date back that far. |

Thanks for this. To complete the picture I would really like to know how and when Gunild Neilsdatter (born 1794) arrived in Amerika. My living family members believe Cornelia Johnson and Gunild Neilsdatter to be the same person. Cornelia Johnson and her son Andrew (Anders) born 1841 show up on the Boone County Illinois census of 1860. Gunild's son Halvor Johanneson (Johnson) emigrated with wife Ranei (Randina) and 4 children in 1885 on the ship "Nor"......but I see no indication of his mother Gunild and brother Anders leaving for Amerika in the parish records or on a ship's list of passengers. Can you help ? |

I understand that the passenger lists for the ships leaving Norway for America is incomplete. I'm looking in the period of May 1855 ...perhaps the ship named Familien. Is there a chance that a list of passengers will be available? .....or is it forever lost? Where does the information come from that is being compiled into lists? Thanks for your help. |

Okay, failing that I would like to find a death certificate for Gunild Nilsdatter Kleven under Askilt to satisfy me that she died in Norway....or went to America and died there. She was born 1794, married Johanes Halvorsen in 1818, had children in 1819,1822, 1834 and 1841. The oldest Halvor Johannesen went to America with his family in 1855. There is some thought that Gunild and her youngest son Ander followed later ...name changed in America as Cornelia Johnson and Andrew Johnson. If I had evidence of her death record in Norway or in Boone County Illinois area it would paint a picture....or a parish record indicating their intent to leave Norway ........

Well here is a baptismal record that has a Anders born Sept 10, 1841 to a Johannes Halvorsen and Gunhild Nilsdatter. See Number 85
