Well no wonder, it's very confusing. The letter writer didn't clearly state the relationship. Here's the family of Osmund's brother Tormod in 1910.

1910 Norway Census
Strandgate 91 in Haugesund kjøpstad
- all the children born in Haugesund
Malene Førland born 30.07.1860 in Tysvær Ptg, widow, Skibsrederi & Huseier <-------widow of Tormod who was brother to Osmund
Tormod Reinert Førland born 29.11.1884, Kemisk tekniker
Dagmar Josefine Førland born 27.03.1888, Ft. tjenestepike
Malene Førland born 29.03.1891
Johanne Sofie Førland born 30.06.1896
Tormod Andreas Førland born 23.10.1898

If Osmund's brother Tormod is the grandfather (or great-grandfather) of the letter writer, then the letter writer is most likely the son (or grandson) of Tormod Reinert Førland or Tormod Andreas Førland. But Osmund had other brothers who had sons named Tormod, born in Tysvaer (at least one was born on Førland). Need more info to pin it down.

Yes, I was just coming to that realization before I had to leave for work. I don't have both Tormods listed in that family. Somehow, I missed that. And also, since Tormod is a family name along with Forland by this time, The Tormod of the letter could be descended from any of the brothers listed in that census. Silly me. My apologies. You have worked so hard to give me this information. And I really do appreciate it. Thanks again.

Too bad my cousin Pam and her father never made that trip to Norway. All these questions would be answered.

Hi Jane ! Tried the direct contact option, but was denied access as I am new member of the forum.
I have the above Tormod Johan Andersen Førland in my database, as well as parents, siblings, descendants and ancestors, so I have quite a comprehensive story. Only person on which, I have little information, is Osmund Tormodsen Forland b 12 jan 1854, as he emigrated in 1872. I have some information about him, based on what I have found in the US censuses 1900,1910,1930 as well as his marriage record in cook county, ill and his and his wifes death notices from the California Death index. Hopefully this connection can fill those gaps for me :-)
Linda Christiansen has already responded, so I am at present preparing several reports to mail her.

Update on Oswald George Christiansen: On Ancestry.com I was just doing an updated search. I came across his WWII draft registration card, I stated earlier that I was rejecting the 1930 censes which listed his occupation as a beautician, because I was having trouble reconciling that occupation to his earlier listed occupation which was listed as rigger. Just did not seem likely to me. Well, surprise, the WWII draft registration card said his occupation of owner of a Beauty Parlor on 5920 5th Ave. Brooklyn NY. His sister who lived with him was Dorothy Morland, so I know that this is the correct Oswald George. It does not mention Harriet, the wife listed on the Census. So something probably happened there. But now I am off running again.

Thanks Jane, I have all of those now, and it was the WWII Draft Registration, that solidified Harriet for me. Also found a family tree on Ancestry that lists another wife: Bertha Petersen, but can't find any documents to verify. Still no children.

Sorry, I've been AOL for a while. My mother passed away. I took some time off to take care of her. Now getting ready for family reunion, but not on the Norwegian side of the family, but it did pull me back in. Glad to see you are still there.

This is apparently Oswald's first wife since the name is Richter in the 1900 census:

And the Norwegian side of her departing for US:
