Hello: Looking for information on Johan A Stokke and his daughter Agnetta.

I have a little information about my grandmother. She was "born 1856 in Gjovik." She married Peter Brynildson in Vang North Dakota,USA in 1886. She is buried in Govan, Saskatchewan, Canada. Agnetta had 4 children that lived: Hendrik, Josephine, Amelia and Gyda.

Johan is born in 1829 Norway and his wife's name was Josephine(?). HIs wife did not come to America, so possibly died before he immigrated. His children born in Norway were Ingeborg, Agnetta, Andrew, and Edward.

Any help would be appreciated.

This looks like her emigration on 13 May 1886. Headed for Rio, Wisconsin.

Here is the baptism record for Stener born in 1863. See number 47. Mother is Berthe Svendsdatter. Same as in the 1865 Census posted by Jan Peter.

Find Stokke (two farms or sub-farms Stokke) on this list of farms in Gjøvik. An online family tree (see below) places your family (probably your family) at Stokke Øvre Nordre:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_farms_in_Gj%C3%B8vik

from Family Search, possibly the birth of the father:

Johan Andersen b 10 Feb 1830 in Vardal, Oppland, Norway
Event Place: , VARDAL, OPLAND, NORWAY
Birth Date: 10 Feb 1830
Father: Anders Jorgensen
Mother: Elie Larsdatter

Stenar Johansen born 22 Feb 1863 in Vardal, Oppland, Norway parents Johan Andersen and Berthe Svendsdr

Andreas Johansen born 17 Aug 1865 Vardal, Oppland, Norway parents Johan Andersen and Berthe Svendsdr

from Family Search

Marriage
Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd
Event Date: 15 Apr 1829
Event Place: Biri, Oppland, Norway

Still using only Family Search, birth of children who could be siblings to same Johan Andersen:

Birth
Johan Andersen
Birth Date: 21 Feb 1830
Event Place: VARDAL, OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Birth
Lars Andersen
Birth Date: 13 Oct 1833
Event Place: VARDAL,OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Birth
Marthe Andersen
Birth Date: 10 Oct 1835
Event Place: VARDAL,OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Birth
Agnethe Andersen
Birth Date: 14 Mar 1838
Event Place: VARDAL,OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents: Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Birth
Helene Andersen
Birth Date: 14 Mar 1838
Event Place: VARDAL, OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents: Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Birth
Antonette Andersen
Birth Date: 16 Apr 1840
Event Place: VARDAL,OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents: Anders Jorgensen and Eli Larsd

Below, this could be the baptism of Anders Jorgensen, who could be grandfather to your Agnetta:

Anders Jorgensen
Baptism Date: 02 Feb 1800
Event Place: VARDAL,OPLAND,NORWAY
Parents Jorgen Andersen and Agnete Jorgensdr

The above needs research in the primary sources, as lyndal40 was doing. But thought it would be fun to show that name Agnete may be traditional in the family for several generations at least. Below, link to a family tree on Family Search that pops up once you start searching on these earlier names.

Anders Jørgensen born 1799 at Stokke Øvre Nordre, Vardal, Oppland, Norway; died 1840
Father Jørgen Andersen b Stokke Øvre Nordre, Vardal, Oppland; d 1812
Mother Agnete Jørgensdatter b 1775 Sveen, Vardal, Oppland and d 1837 Stokke Øvre Nordre, Vardal, Oppland, Norway

LINK:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/S5QR-Y3R

Another tree:
http://www.solhellingadata.no/Rune/Slekt/html/fam/fam10416.html

If the above line checks out, then the family tree creator is a likely cousin of yours. Another likely cousin initiated the discussion on the link below:
http://forum.arkivverket.no/topic/181978-agnete-joergensdtr-vardalbiri-naar-ble-hun-foedt/

Same source (Family Search index of Norwegian records) Eli Larsdatter parents said to be Lars Pedersen b 1758 Gjøsti, Biri, Oppland and Marte Jacobsdatter b 1768 Aalset Søndre, Biri, Oppland.

Again, need to confirm with primary sources (church books). People start to copy and paste stuff like this, and when an error has occurred, that error then gets copied over and over. That said, sometimes online family trees turn out to be right. It could happen. The Family Search tree I linked to cites appropriate sources and appears to be credible.

1801 Norway census at Stokke Øvre, Vardal prestegjeld
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058259001814
Jørgen Andersen 27
Agnethe Jørgensdatter 25
Anders Jørgensen 2

Norwegian friends - please correct me if I'm wrong. When spoken, "Agnethe" would end the same as Agnetta, with "uh." The final "e" has the effect of the final "a."
