Ferncourt is not mentioned among the ships this person worked on.

Jan Peter, unfortunately my (very !!) limited Norwegian doesn't allow me to figure out very much of this - but the reference to the MV Slemdal caught my eye. Please follow the attached link which has a crew list including Johan Johansen

http://www.warsailors.com/singleships/slemdal.html

Is this the man we are looking for, or another Johan Johansen ??

Thankyou so much to everyone.I got really excited seeing the picture, but alas it looks as though this is another Johan Johansen.I thought at first maybe the ships name had been copied incorrectly on the marriage certificate, but unless the Frontenac was in Swansea for 1941, this sadly is ruled out.
Lynda, i would say your finding is definitel;y the correct Johan Johansen. Unfortunately, he seems to have disappeared from the face of the earth. It was assumed he had got homesick and returned to Norway, as I believe the grounds for divorce were desertion.Don't even know if he was aware of the divorce, and for that reason might not have re-married.Just wish I had a bit more information to go on as I don't even know names of any siblings etc.I just thought it would have been nice if I had some information to pass on to his grandchildren and great-granchildren.I really appreciater everyone's help and can't thank you enough. Regards Ann

Ann, I am not sure what is the meaning of this quote, as the Frontenac could have been in Swansea in 1941. Here is the arrival in New York of Johan Johansen on the Frontenac. It arrived March 26, 1941 in New York and was scheduled to leave for England on April 24, 1941. It does not say where in England. For example I have found a Johan Johansen born abt 1921 with dimensions of five foot seven inches and 130 lbs and one 6 foot tall and 200 lbs. Probably not the same person.

New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Johan Johansen
Arrival Date: 26 Mar 1941
Birth Date: abt 1920
Age: 21
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Frontenac

In this list of Crew Members that is found on line and on Ancestry.com there is probably your person, but the data is confounded by the fact that there is probably two or three Johan Johansens in the group.

I posted this record before, but what I had not noted was that this Johan Johansen signed on to ship from Swansea and the date is given as June 27, 1942. Also you can find this ship in the list of Jan Peter above.

As I mentioned before there is probably at least two Johan Johansen born abt 1821, Norway working on ships. There is the Johan Johansen born Feb 28, 1921 from Risør surfaced by Jan Peter. I have a list for him later, but here is a list put togther from Crew Lists into New York on Ancestry.com. This list is in date order. Are they all the same person and perhaps your Johan Johansen. Thankyou Lynda. I will collate all the information you have so kindly submitted. I know he was connected to The Ferncourt Dec, 1941 as per marriage cerificate. This would have been while the ship was in swansea for repair. As you say, there are at least 2 seamen of the same name,I just need to ascertain which is the correct one as I can understand he would probably have gone from one ship to another. Thankyou for your patience. Regards, Ann

I found four records for Johan Johansen on the Ferncourt, arriving into New York. Here is probably the most interesting. The origianl manifest states that he was engaged {hired] on 10 May 1941 in New York. Left the port of Swansea on June 9, 1942 and arrived in New York on June 28, 1942. He is listed as 5"6", no weight. He is also listed as a Motorman. However birth date is off by 10 years.
