John Johannsen the father, husband of Emma, died on or about 8 Mar 1959. I believe the original poster says that she got his father's name from his d.c.

May be worth tracking this family to locate Mr. Johannssen the elder prior to his death 1882. Bethany maybe you have researched this?

Charles Weigel 57 Germany
Daughter Lillian Weigel 21 Louisiana
Daughter Augusta Weigel 19 Louisiana

There was an article in the Times-Picayune about the 50th (I think) anniversary of a fraternal organization in which John Johannsen was mentioned as one of the earliest and still living members from 1889. I'll collect the documentary evidence. That's the earliest reference to the name that I've seen in the papers. on 7 Jan 1941, pg 7, col 7 titled
"Druid Veterans Given Places of Honor at Dinner; More than 50 years service four gain recognition" John Johannsen is one of those so honored.

FYI the organization is the United Ancient Order of Druids.

The connection between Bucinich and Johannsen... on 15 Sept 1944 in the Times-Picayune in article titled "Sewerage Board Will Pension 62"
M. Bucinich 75, 19 1/2 years $47...(2nd husband of Rosa)
J. Johannsen 75, 23 years $46.30.
Looks like they may have known each other through their employment?

For the poster, when John Johannsen the son died at Los Angeles, Californa in 1927 one of the announcements of the service in the paper carried this "and Grace, Idaho papers please copy." Who was in Grace Idaho?

He could well be John in Norway, in 1865 there were ca 16. 000 named John in Norway.
Johannsen is more rarely compared with Johansen, ca 100 in 1865 used Johannsen as lastname.

More common was Johan/Johannes/Johanes (ca 60. 000 in 1865) which often was changed to John in America.

Interesting that he kept the -sen ending, the majority changed to -son whis was used in Norway from the middleage and earlier (-sson)

If John em. as an adult without his parents his fathers 1. name was most likely Johann (Johan/Johanes/Johannes)

Just a thought.
Your g.grandfather was John/Jurgen Johannsen.
Did he use both John Johannsen and Jurgen Johannsen or John Jurgen Johannsen?
The reason I ask is that John could also be the name of his Norwegian grandfather and Jurgen his German grandfather.
Jurgen in German is spelled with two `` dots above the u (the German letter for Y)

With a creeping sense of frustration I'm beginning to think John Johannsen was perhaps born elsewhere than Louisiana. So here is this off-the-wall migrant leaving through Oslo headed to New Orleans in 1894, unmarried machinist born about 1870 living in Olso prior to departure:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=106895&merk=106895#ovre

106895 Oslo 1846 1894 Juni 16 Johan M. Johansen m u Maskinist 24 Kr.a. Mĝllegd.34 New Orleans 1849 Norge 175 - Virginia V.kr.s

Actually there are a number of folks who left Norway with New Orleans as their destination. The largest number of these, several hundreds left from Bergen, 60 from Oslo in the above database.
