Another, but painful, method to find the correct Jennie Johnson is to hunt down every Jennie Johnson. Here is a list of Jennie Johnson marriages in the pre-1900 marriages database at the Illinois State Secretary of State's page:

Strikethrough on those marriages before Dec 1887 when the divorce was finalized. There are a few interesting possibles here--those with Mrs. might be the first to look for, Cook county before other counties, etc.

Painful - agreed. I have checked some but unfortunately without keeping a list of those eliminated (which was everyone I checked, choosing Jennie A, Jennie E, and Mrs Jennie, for example). So yes, may be time to get more systematic than that. On Family Search website, marriages from this list may pop up showing parents and bride age, and the couples can be correlated with census to determine bride approximate year of birth. As a group we can chip away and maybe your list can be the master list, Jackie.

Hi tkoller, nice to have you back. ;-). About your question, probably not, because Amy does not appear on the return trip of Jenny and Eva going back to Chicago.
The family in Norway never mentioned Jenny or Eva Sophie. This suggests that Jenny has died fairly early. As you probably know, we don't have online access to all death records in the USA (such as church records). Public (county) death records are spotty; not all deaths were recorded.
If Jenny died and Eva Sophie was placed in an orphanage, and maybe adopted, we won't be able to see her easily. Other scenarios are possible as well. But so far, we have not found a fifteen-year-old Eva or Sophie in 1900, living with a mother Jenny. If either of them died, it's harder to identify them alone. My guess is Jennie died before 1900, but we don't know until we know.
A bit of a recap, to remind ourselves:
Some suggestions are made in this thread for what to do, to search further. One is check out Jackie's master list of Jennys getting married. If Jenny remarried, we would seek a death record under her married name (obviously). So far, Jackie has gotten no help with it yet. Another is to contact Sophie Datz's daughter Alice Markus in Florida (or Alice's daughters). Does contacting them interest you? Clarifying who is Sophie Datz will solve the riddle of Amy Johnson.
If Amy is Peter Olaf's child, IF, my guess is her mother is not Jenny. Common things being common, most commonly Jenny as mother of little Amy would have Amy with her in 1885 - and she does not.
The US has a federal census 1880 and in 1900. A twenty-year gap. Unfortunately all these people fall into that gap. It is harder to get a trace on people in the census during this era.

It might be of value to track the actual death record of the transcription found by Jane earlier for the first wife of Peter Olson in Norway. Maybe a clue to movements there? It appears that Peter, his wife and both children came but when did his wife return and the children go with her?
The parish register didn't contain any other useful information about Peter and the children. However, there was a dødsfall protokol for Sophie Caroline which has some details which I don't understand. It does say Peter is in America & that she had only two minor children #2447. Perhaps Norwegian readers could read the far right panel and translate?

It's looking bad for Sophie Datz, though. Another line of inquiry is descendants of Sophie Caroline Larsen in USA (children /grandchildren of James Peter Johnson), or of Ovidia Caspara Caspersen - though it's a long shot that the story of Jennie is known or remembered in those families. |

I'm home from the hospital for the weekend and just got papers for Jenny's father death from the archive.
It says that Jenny Johnson did not get any inheritance when they have not heard from Jennie or her husband Peter Johnson for 26 years. The document is written on 21 April 1913.
This means that the family did not hear anything from her after she traveled back to America in 1886.
So mybee she died not long after the devorce?
Hope to hear about the Datz family, but at the moment it seems unlikly. |

Yes, sadly, we can guess Jennie died soon after her return to Chicago - not certainly, but seems likely. She was not estranged from her family. To the contrary, she went to great expense and effort to visit them in 1885. She might not want to write about her troubles, but surely if she lived she would make contact again at some point.
Though the probate in Norway 1913 does not prove Jennie's death, it does establish that the scenario established in this thread for Jennie is correct. Jennie first filed for a legal separation from Peter (wherein he would help support her and her child). He then turned and filed for divorce on grounds of adultery. Peter was, at least in 1900, mentally unstable and it is not hard to believe he did not notify the family in Norway, if he learned of Jennie's death. The divorce papers in Chicago might affirm she was alive when the divorce was finalized. Presumably she would be, but if a person fails to appear at a final court hearing, I believe the divorce would be granted despite the absence.
Find a Grave website has a memorial to Jennie:

Created by Mike Jaska. While Jennie's maiden name is transcribed Jaska in one online record, the SAME record is transcribed Jorstad in another database. Thus we can guess the FAG creator is perhaps memorializing all "Jaskas" and knows no more of Jennie.
Tkoller, you could write to Mike with the correction and additions (her birth place, etc) but otherwise, probably he can't help.

| In the newspapers (the Chicago Daily Inter-ocean) there were several Jennie and Mrs. Jennie Johnsons mentioned outside of the marriages and deaths listings. A couple of the Mrs Jennie were landlord or boarding room house keepers. Another number were in other trouble with the law, petty theft etc. It's possible if someone was able to sort through city directories of Chicago we might get an idea which of these might be persons of interest. |
