These might be the records that would help to find fates of the children and Kari:

Great information! The plot thickens!!! I am confident of the Norwegian records for this family at this point. The U.S. records are another story.

If Lars and Kari Rustin and Lars and Kari Hansen are the same people in Odin, then there are at least 3 children born after Sigurd.

Sigurd 1882

Twins 1886
Hans Olaf 1887/1888

Lars died in 1893

1895 Tom and Hans live with other families.

1895 census a Syvert Larson age 13 lives in Odin with another family.
1895 census Peter Larson age 18 lives alone in Odin.

1900 Census Sigurd Larson age 18, listed as a boarder. lives and works in St. James. Mary is now married and lives in St.James.

So the question is where is Kari from 1895-1920?

Strengthens the possibility it is her in St. Peter's Hospital.

1905 Census Kare L. Rustin
1910 Census Kari Lars Rustin
1920 Census Kari Lars Rustin

We know she died prior to 1923 when my dad's baby book has both of Sigurd's parents listed as deceased.

I have sent for this death certificate : Kari Lars Rusten died March 12, 1920

But where is she from 1895-1905?

In the pre-Hippa days Minnesota was very open with records of relatives who ended up in the state mental health system. I was able to get files complete with pictures (in one case the only known photo of the man), visitor's logs, catalog of physical scars, assessments. But that was in the mid-1980s.

If you have actually seen her in the 1905 Minnesota census one question is asked how long you have lived in the state and the enumeration district. That might help narrow the time that she was committed or the time that she was transferred to St. Peter.

I will check that. But, we still are not sure it is the right person. Just a lead.

Well, I looked and it says 16 years and 11 months living in that enumeration district. Her age is a fairly close match to your Kari. If you sign in at this site you can view the page:

Yes, I just looked at it too! The date of the Census is June 28th 1905. That would mean she was there from July/August 1893. One record lists Lars death date in April 1893. Wow! I can't wait to see if the hospital sends records. Thank you for thinking of checking that. This would explain the children are separated in the 1895 census records, IF this is the correct person.

A women of a certain name in proven and peak reproductive years suddenly stops having children and another woman with the same or similar name ends up in an institution at the same time. That is probably more than a coincidence. The littlest ones would hardly have known her. The next calamity happens when her husband dies and the children need care.

He died in 1933. His obituary just listed that he was survived by one sister and four brothers. I know Peter survived him as he signed Sigurds death certificate. I have information on Sigurd from 1900 on, it was just the earlier years. Also have info on sister Mary. But not much on older brothers Lars and Peter except dates of birth. Didn't even know there were older half-siblings or that there were younger ones. So, I
have gotten so much information through this forum. I am getting a good story of Sigurd's life now.

Peter signed Sigurd's death certificate as Rusten, Larson, or Hanson?
