If you broaden the search to all of Febuary 1853 a search produces 529 names. Too many to post here, however if we limit it to last names Lars*, female born in Feb 1853 in Hedmark, the list is.

Here is a marriage for a Lars Henrikson in Romedal (of course not to a Pernille!):
Source information: Hedmark county, Romedal, Parish register copy nr. 9 (1846-1866), Marriage records 1854, page 174.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9104&idx_id=9104&uid=ny&idx_side=-171

He was a "player" before his marriage #73:
Source information: Hedmark county, Romedal, Parish register copy nr. 9 (1846-1866), Birth and baptism records 1853, page 52.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9104&idx_id=9104&uid=ny&idx_side=-51

The marriage record clearly shows Mari Anne's place of birth in Hedemarken, Norway. Despite looking at many parish birth / baptisms no Marianne answering the description has yet been found.

Since Marianne's daughters in the 1900 census say their mother was born in Denmark (and granted that their stepmother was actually born in Denmark) maybe Marianne had a connection to Denmark? Here is a somewhat slightly possible long shot territory really from the Danish emigration website:

Navn: Larsen, Mariane
Stilling:Jomfru
Alder:22
Bestemmelsessted:New York
Kontrakt nr.:177300
Forevisningsdato:11/25/1881
Sidste oph.sogn:Aalborg
Sidste oph. amt:Aalborg
Sidste oph.sted:Aalborg
Bestemmelses land:USA
Bestemmelses by:New York City
Bestemmelses stat:New York State
Skibsnavn:Thingvalla
Bemærkninger:ANM: Thingvalla.
IDkode:D8182L0611

Petronelle Olsdatter was born Aug 7 1820, 5th record right page.
Her parents were Ole Andersen and Ane Olsdatter, Stafseng. (The farm Marianne stayed on in 1865)

Here's a Lars Henriksen on Dotterud in 1865, with a wife and many children:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/bosted_land/bf01038033005981

The marriage record for Axel and Mari Anne has Mariane age 29 (as I read it) marrying a groom age 23. Since Mariane seems more likely to be in her mid-thirties at the time, would be one reasonable hypothesis that she shaved off some years. Which doesn't explain the emigration record, but oh well....

Amazing! My father had always suspected that his great-grandfather Axel had had a first wife, and he had heard stories about his cousins who were children of Axel and Mariane, but we had no evidence until I located that marriage record, and now you have helped me solve some of the mystery of who Mariane Larsdatter was. Thank you all for your expertise and your assistance.
