Some of you put in a considerable amount of time helping in my search for Betsy Johnson (b. 28 Feb 1850 in Bergen, we think) in late 2013. (I can't believe it's been that long ago!) I would like to pursue a particular angle, but I'm not sure how to go about it.
Brief Summary: G. L. [George Leonard] Johnson attended Betsy's funeral in Iowa. I suspect he is a relative. He is the son of Johan Bendik Johnson and Martha Olsdatter Wenos.
Johan Bendik Johnson (Buran/Buranval/Buranvold/Buranvald) was born 17 Nov 1850 at a farm near Levanger. This is the same year Betsy was born. We have ruled out Betsy being a sister, but I am wondering if they could be cousins. That means I need to identify and look at Johan’s grandparents.
Johan Bendik’s parents are John Olsen (Buranval) and Randi Jacobsdatter. How can I find John’s parents and all of their children? Unfortunately, I haven’t mastered searching in the archives. I seem to not get very far before I land on a page in Norwegian. When I click the English option, it takes me to a new starting page.
I have uncovered one bit of new information found in a letter written by my grandmother about the family history. She writes about Betsy, “[her] parents were married in Norway and two children were born to them in Norway – one son and a daughter, Betsy.”
Thank you for any help with navigating the archives.

Einar, this is wonderful! Thank you very much!
I entered this information into a new family tree in RootsMagic (my genealogy software) so I could picture it better. The one I am particularly interested in is Ole Joensen:
Joen Olsen was born out of wedlock Aug 26 1821, see #17. His mother was Dorthe Johansdatter, Godøien. His father was Ole Joensen, Rognes.
Ole Joensen is the grandfather of Johan Bendik. Is there an easy way to get a list of all of the children of Ole and Dorthe? Thanks to your help we know about John Olsen (b. 26 Aug 1821), but are there others? Those are the lines I would like to explore to find cousins of John Bendick.
Again, thank you!

- I wish I knew. It is not very likely that Ole and Dorthe had more children since Joen (John) was born out of wedlock and we don't know that they were married later.

Nancy, help me see this... Johan Bendik Johnsen (JBJ) has four birth (genetic) grandparents, one of whom is Ole Joensen, Rognes. There could be more step-grandparents, especially given the circumstances of the birth of John Olsen (JBJ dad). The children of Ole Joensen, Rognes will be full siblings or half-siblings to JBJ's dad - BUT they will all be Olsen. Ole has to have a second son John if Ole proves to be the point of connection. Thus it is equally likely that any grandparent of JBJ will name a son John (and possibly Ole being the least likely, although sometimes a man does have two sons with same first name). So, one doesn't want to follow just Ole offspring, right? |

Jane, thank you for helping me see this more clearly. You are right! I think I was focusing just on the paternal line, but was even short-sighted in that regard since there would be two grandfathers.
Thanks, Einar, too!
It would be great if I could get one of Johan Bendik's offspring to do DNA testing. Hmmmm . . . that just might be worth pursing.

You can search "All Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927" for people in various ways and it provides a way to find a birth date and thus find the person in Digitalarkivet easier. The data base may not be totally complete however which means some births may be missing. Searching the data base for Sør-Trondelag,, for mother Dorthe Johans* birth 1821 plus or minus 10 years, turns up only two records. One for Joen, which you already know and this one.
Name: Ole Olesen Gender: Male Baptism Date: 10 nov 1816 Baptism Place: Horg, Sor Trondelag, Norway Father: Ole Arentsen Mother: Dorthe Johansdr FHL Film Number: 126769 Reference ID: 2:NBG1RW
This appears to be the baptism record, See number 8, however the child is named Johannes in this record.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16238&idx_id=16238&uid=ny&idx_side=-5
Unfortunately Ole Joensen is too common a name in Støren, Sør-Trondelag to sort out if the father of Joen married and had other chilldren through this search procedure. |

Thank you, Lyndal. I hope to eventually master the archives. Meanwhile, I appreciate those of you who help!

I stumbled upon this list called Surnames List of Sør-Trondelag. I have not had a chance to look at it in depth but it does contain some of the names from above, such as Lillebjørgen and Fodlstad. Might be a place where you can shorten your search for cousins of Betsy_
