Here is the 1865 Norwegian Census for the family of Ole Johannessen and Guru Petersdatter, however I do not see any Martha although she should be only ten years old.

NHDC 1865

However I do find her confirmation in 1871 following the baptism info. See number 37

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6625&idx_id=6625&uid=ny&idx_side=-215

This is always fun, but I am not finding any Betys and we are getting a long ways from Bergen.

Yes and very handy direction from Einar on where to start. However I am beginning to doubt that George L Johnson can be a cousin to Betsy Johnson born abt 1850. Certainly does not look like it through the mother of George, Martha Olsdatter Wenos.

I am hoping that Nancy can put this family info into her Genealogy software and come up with some connection between George and his family line and Betsy Johnson but so far I do not see it.

Nancy did you ever get the son Alexander's death certificate which might have another iteration of Betsy's name and birthplace?

Did you ever get the marriage record from Boone county?

Ole and Guru had these children.

Name: Johannes Olesen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 24 jun 1858
Birth Place: Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Baptism Date: 8 aug 1858
Baptism Place: Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Father: Ole Johannesen
Mother: Guru Petersdr

Name: Martha Olesdatter
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 29 mar 1855
Birth Place: Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Baptism Date: 28 mai 1855 (28 May 1855)
Baptism Place: Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Father: Ole Johannesen
Mother: Guru Petersdr

Name: Karen Johannessen
Gender: Female
Baptism Date: 26 nov 1852
Baptism Place: Verdal, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Father: Ole Johannessen
Mother: Guru Petersdatter

Ancestry has chosen to use the fathers last name for Karen just above, but in reality she would have been a Olsdatter just like her siblings.

And none of them would likely have been given the last name of Johnsen or Jonsen or some such variation.

Nancy to summarize where I am going with this seemingly aimless search is to establish who the grandparents of George Leonard Johnson were. They were

John Olsen Burnaval
wife
Randi Jacobsdatter Lillebjørgen

Ole Johannesen
wife
Guru Pedersdatter

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but if any one of those four had a sibling named Johan or some variation, and that sibling named Johan, could have a daughter named Betsy or some variation and thus would be a cousin once removed to George L.

Hi Lyndal,

I picked just one of your posts to reply to, but I appreciate them all! I have had a great time looking at the documents you linked to and updating Johan Bendik's tree with new information. Just hoping someday I'll be able to connect that tree with my own.

I didn't find any connection in the surname list you found in RootsWeb, but kept looking since so many of the names were familiar.

I very much appreciate the time and effort you have put into trying to help me!

Nancy

Focusing on one grandparent of George L Johnson, the mother of Martha Olsdatter Wenos was Guru Pettersdatter. This is likely her baptism record from Ancestry.com. Vuku is listed as a muncipality in Verdal by Wikipedia.

Name: Guru Petter Andreasdatter
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 22 jul 1820
Baptism Date: 27 aug 1820
Baptism Place: Vuku, Nord Trondelag, Norway
Father: Petter Andreas Nielsen
Mother: Kierstie Pedersdr
FHL Film Number: 125444
Reference ID: 2:1J6R7FS

See also number 17 right hand page.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=17063&idx_id=17063&uid=ny&idx_side=-20

This is likely the marriage record for her parents.

Name: Peter Andreas Nielsen
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Birth Date: 1790
Marriage Date: 17 okt 1817 (17 Oct 1817)
Marriage Place: Stiklestad, Nord Trondelag, Norway
Spouse: Kierstie Pedersdr
FHL Film Number: 125444
Reference ID: 2:1J6RW0K

See also number 13

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16402&idx_id=16402&uid=ny&idx_side=-62

They had the following children that I could find. Name - birth date - baptism date - place - father - mother

Ingebor Kirstine Petter Andreasdatter
24 nov 1817 1 jan 1818 Stiklestad, Nord Trondelag, Norway Petter Andreas,
Kierstie

Guru Petter Andreasdatter
22 jul 1820 27 aug 1820 Vuku, Nord Trondelag, Norway Petter Andreas,
Kierstie

Niels Petter Andreasen
5 jan 1823 Vuku, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway Petter Andreas,
Kierstie

Pauline Petersdatter
6 aug 1826 Vuku, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway Peter,
Kierstie

People with one date give only the baptism date. As you can see there are not any Johans or any variation of that name so we should not expect any Betsy Johansons or variations of that name to have come from this grandparents side of the family.

The father of Martha Olsdatter Webos was likely Ole Johannessen. This is probably his baptism record.

Ole Johannesen in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Ole Johannesen
Gender: Male
Baptism Date: 4 mai 1826 (4 May 1826)
Baptism Place: Vuku, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway
Father: Johannes Thomesen
Mother: Magnil Olsdr
FHL Film Number: 125445
Reference ID: bk 6 pg 123

See also number 63

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16400&idx_id=16400&uid=ny&idx_side=-64

So far he is the only child I have found for Johannes and Magnil.

You are correct Jackie, I did mean Martha, this is getting a little confusing, I need to make a spreadsheet to follow the participants.
