I am seeking information on a period of about 21 years in my grandmother's life when she seems to disappear from the record, in Norway. Submitted this same query to NHF about 2 yrs ago; no results. I will summarize all I know of her life in Norway - may take a couple of posts to do this - and hope our veteran experts can help me.
12 Dec 1871 - she was born at Aase, Hordaland - east of Alversund. Parents John Christiansen, Synneve Larsdatter. They were lodgers - innerst - on the farm of Synneve's parents. Andrine was baptised at Alversund church.
1874 - her parents buy the family farm at Nedre Myksvoll (various spellings) from John Christiansen's parents. Location is northeast of Alversund, in Lygre parish, Lindaas commune.
3 Oct 1886 - Andrine is confirmed at Lygre church. She is eldest of 5 sisters, one brother. This is the last record I find for her until 1907...21 years. I will continue in a new post.

(Continued from first post)
1891 CENSUS for Lygra sokn i Lindaas: Persons #529 thru 535 on the farm at Nedre Mo/ksvold (I must write the Norwegian o as o/) are Andrine's parents and 5 siblings. Andrine is absent. A 20-yr-old farm girl...how far from home could she be? Trying various combinations of her name and birth year, the only possibility I find in the 1891 census is an Andrine Sto/rksen, servant on a farm Flato/en in Hammer/Hamre...born 1871 in Alversund. (The Alversund parish register shows no 1871 births with this unusual patronymic.) I checked her grandparent's farm at Aase (1891 telling for Hamre or Hammer); person #362 is Andrine's brother, described as beso/gende - visitor - but no Andrine.
1900 CENSUS for 1263 Lindaas commune: persons # 2738 thru 2742 on the farm Mo/ksvold nedre are Andrine's parents, her brother Ludvik, and 2 youngest sisters Josefine and Kristine. Her two eldest sisters Johanna and Malena appear in the 1900 CENSUS for 1301 Bergen as persons 9491 and 9492, last name given as Johnsen Mukshald. The sisters are factory workers residing together on Trangesmuget...but no Andrine.
1907 PARISH REGISTER FOR LYGRE/LINDAAS lists some names of prospective? emigrants to America. An entry for 2 Sep 1907 is: Pige Andrine Johnsdtr Moksvold, born 1871. First record in 21 years!
1907 PARISH REGISTER FOR NYKIRKEN/BERGEN records the 17 Sep marriage of Andrine to Hans Olaisen Fosse, my grandfather, age 40. First marriage for bride and for groom.
EMIGRANTER FRA BERGEN 1874-1930 has entries for Hans and Andrine for 26 Okt 1907 at person # 62623...bound for "Wancouver". They settled in Washington state, had 2 children - my father and uncle. Andrine died age 43 of cancer, Hans age 47 of stroke. No letters, family bible...nothing remains.
So there is a summary of what I know of Andrine Johnsdatter. Any record found between 1886 and 1907 would be greatly appreciated. One thing: Andrine was an eldest child, yet her brother gained ownership of the family farm. Was this typical? I just wondered if she might have been estranged from her family over this.

In time gone by and probably still today, the eldest son inherits all. The only way your ancestress would have been the heir is if there were no boys in the family at no matter what ordinal she was in birth.

Have you tried to search the NHDC site. If you use the Advanced Search for the 1900 Norwegian Census part you can input: And* Joh* born 1869 to 1873, living in Bergen or Hordaland. That search turns up 8 candidates. The one I found most interesting is Andrine Johannesen living in 1301 Bergen born in 1872. She was not born in Åse but in Isdalstøen. However I think Åse and Isdalstøen are quite close to one another.

In the transcriptions of deaths at Washington State Secretary of State site Andrine's parents are described as John Christianson and S. Larson a much better match to the family at Aase in 1875:

NHF veterans I hope you will agree this is a frustrating puzzle. It occurred to me Andrine may have been out of Norway for some of that 21-year blank period. Several members of her father's family had emigrated to the USA in the 1860s and 1870s: his younger brothers Hans C. J. Tweedt and John Christian Tweet (names they used in the USA); his younger sister Synneve (married name Pederson); and his parents Christian Jonsen and Ambjorg Johannesdatter. Some of them were prospering in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Idaho and could have brought her over.
However, I find no record of Andrine as an emigrant from Norway before 1907; and I do not find her in the USA census for 1900, nor in 1895 & 1905 State censuses (MN and WI).

BTW jkmarler and JaneC you are correct, my grandmother was living on 6 acres they were buying at Custer, WA when she died in 1915. Cause: breast cancer.

The Law of Inheritance of a farm in Norway was changed a few decades ago.
Oldest son was heir to the farm, then his children before 2nd oldest son etc.
The Law has existed for more than 1000 years named Odelsrett-Åseterett

I have read that Minnesota was the state in USA who had a law that resembled the Norwegian, although without the same Equation

Reg, Hans Olaisen Fosse b. 1867 in Alversund, he worked as mechanical engenering worker in Bergen 1891 living at Søndre Pothullet 1.

Interesting about the inheritance laws....

1891, the parents and siblings mentioned by Ron earlier, seen here:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01052991000607

1900, Andrine's sister is Jonsdtr:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037332002741

The 1907 emigration Ron mentioned spells her name
Andrine Kristine Fosse? født Johnsen
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/gen/vis/8/pe00000000718606

Definitely making progress here, big time -

By way of encouraging interest in this topic I will summarize here info on Andrine's family and, later, her husband Hans Fosse. Her family has owned the Myksvoll farm since the 18th century - and owns it today. Their genealogy goes back a long way in the local area. Some family members claim - half-seriously - descent from Viking king Haakon the Good, who is buried nearby at Seim. Her sisters Johanna and Larsina Kristine emigrated in early 1900s, married Norwegian immigrants in the USA, lived in Seattle where I knew them growing up. Her sisters Malena and Josefine moved to Bergen, married, their grandchildren - my cousins - and younger descendants live there today. Brother Karl Ludvik inherited the Myksvoll farm, lived there until his death in 1954. His bachelor son Johannes was the last person to farm the property, until the 1980s. Andrine's mother Synneve died in 1903. Her father John Christiansen lived on the farm as a pensioner until his death in 1919.

Here is some background on Andrine's husband, my grandfather, Hans O. Fosse. You will see that life did not afford him many advantages, and he may not have been much of a marriage prospect. He was born 20 Oct 1867 at Nedre Tveidt, near Alversund, Hamre, Hordaland. He was illegitimate. Parents were Karl Olai Mikkelsen and Christi Christiansdatter, both farm workers. on 10 Nov he was baptized Hans Jakob Olaisen, at Alversund church. His parents married other people and had families that did not include Hans. The 1875 census for Hamre shows him living as pleiebarn - foster child - on the farm of Mons Askildsen at Yttre Fosse, near Alversund. His father was farming just down the road. 1891 census shows him living in Bergen, working as mekanisk vaerksarbeider.
On 23 March 1893 he registers as emigrant from Bergen..."farmer's son"...destination Wisconsin. Arrives Ellis Island 10 April, ship Germanic.
In 1898 he returned to Norway; then registered again as emigrant from Bergen..."he was home for a visit"; destination this time Seattle; arrived in Montreal 26 Aug 1898, ship Labrador...a steerage passenger.
In 1907 he returns again to Norway, marries my grandmother in Bergen, they reach Canada on the Empress of Britain, then probably by rail to Vancouver BC, settle in Washington state.
1910 census shows Hans and Andrine (last name spelled "Foose") farming on rented land at Birch Bay, near Ferndale, WA. One child: my uncle Henry Johan.
1913: per local records they put money down - on very unfavorable terms - on 6 acres at Custer, WA near Ferndale. Two children now: my father Sigurd Kristoffer born 1912.
1915: Both Andrine and Hans die; she in August of cancer, age 43; he in December of stroke, age 47. Children taken in by Andrine's sister Johanna and her husband, Iver Gjertin Iverson.

With her mother dying in 1903, a dødfallsprotokol might be a good thing to find to cut down some of Andrine's missing years. I didn't see such in the probate records now on at the digitalarkivet for Nord Hordaland, but perhaps an email to the archives could get them to look for it.

Anton mentioned that there were 8 And* Jo* in the 1900 census, who were the other less likely ones?

Ron, did you search using "fadder" as a criteria? She could be a godparent to a child of friend or family...
