Hi all, Jane and Kare if you are reading this...due to your excellent help Ive managed to contact the Skipar - relative who we hoped were related to Gunhild (Olaf's sister) and he confirm that he is indeed Gunhild's grandson. We are now in email contact and they are kind enough to share all the stories and details they have as we are indeed then cousins. Ive also managed to register with the Kviteseid municipality and have access to those amazing family tree info. Tomorrow I am travelling back to South Africa for 3 weeks, so will be offline for 3 weeks, but just wanted to thank you so much for your help. I am still waiting on the information from South Africa regarding Olaf's wives death certificates but are hoping I will get in in June. Will post updates when I get something again. Have a great day. Thanks again.

Bravo!!! Your initiative is impressive. And with special note that jwiborg made the Gunhild connection possible.

Well done.

Good day all
Since my last mail to this site, I have been in regular contact with my new found Skipar cousins in Skien. They are the grandchildren of Gunhild Lovodden Hansen, my grandfather Olaf Lovodden Hansen's sister. I must again give credit to all the help I had through your kind replies and information.
Ive also searched in geni and ancestry sites and even though Ive not had contact with relations there, my knowledge of my grandfathers family have greatly expanded.
I have question which I hope you can help me with please. Through the family in SKien they have come across old letters where it is mentioned that before Olaf Hansen left Norway he married Karoline Lunde and they had a daughter called Borghild Marie Hansen. I have studied this a bit and Borghild was born on 11 Feb 1902 in Norway, but I do not know where. Borghild died in Canada on 4 APr 1961. She was married to William Draper in 1937.
My big question is whether you can help me with more info on the marriage between Olaf and Karoline Lunde as to when and where they were married. Also whether they got divorced and when. Borghild's birth records would also be great as it will probably show the parents.
I am also not sure when and if they emigrated to Canada as a family as I cannot find any emigration records. I am trying to confirm its the same Olaf, as the family in Norway also did not know that he was married in Norway before he emigrated.
According to what we have established so far, Olaf arrived in South Africa in 1903 and his first child there was born in 1909. I could not manage to get his marriage records in South Africa, only death certificates for himself and the two wives he had in South Africa.
I hope you can maybe help with some info,
Thanks so much

Here is a Borghild Hansen born in 1902 leaving Norway in 1909 with probably her mother named Karoline Hansen.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000651804

Here is the arrival of Karoline Hansen, listed as wife. , travelling with two others. Going to Dubuc where as we found out below her brother Ingvald and his wife live.

Karoline Hansen
in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Karoline Hansen
Gender: Female
Age: 30
Birth Year: abt 1879
Date of Arrival: 1 May 1909
Vessel: Empress of Ireland
Search Ship Database: Search for the Empress of Ireland in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

This is the transcription of one of the others, I think it must be her brother Martin Lunde.

Martin Lunell
in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
Name: Martin Lunell
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Birth Year: abt 1881
Date of Arrival: 1 May 1909
Vessel: Empress of Ireland
Search Ship Database: Search for the Empress of Ireland in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: Quebec, Canada
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

The third person is her daughter Borghild, transcribed in Ancestry.com as

Name: Bergith Housen
Age: 8
Birth Year: abt 1901

Karoline is listed as "e" for enke or widowed....and she is going to her brother

There is no Karoline Hansen leaving in the Tvedestran utflytteds in 1909 but there is an Anne Lunde going to Canada about 1912 or so. Since Karoline's birth year is 1878 this is probably her in the 1900 census:

Interesting that in the 1900 census in Tvedestrand, Aust-Agder, Karoline's seaman brother Bernhard is listed as being away, in Cape Town.

In Borghild Marie's birth-baptism record (b February 1902) posted by Jackie, her father Olaf Hansen is noted as being a seaman, and the couple's marriage 28 April 1901 is noted at far right.

Marriage of sĝmand (seaman) Ole Hansen and Karoline Lunde in Holt on 28 April
1901

Bridegroom Ole Hansen is listed as born 1873 in Vraadal [in Kviteseid, Telemark], to father Hans Thygesen - so indeed this must be "your" Olaf Hansen.

Holt is now located in the present-day municipality of Tvedestrand.

Of the family in the 1900 Norwegian Census, the only ones left in 1910 are Maren and Anna

1900

1910

And they both left for Canada in 1914 Although I think the birth year for Maren is off by 22 years.

This must be another brother of Karoline.

Ingvald Lunde
in the U.S., Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1895-1956

Ingevald and his wife traveled back and forth from Norway to Canada and to the US and between Canada and the US frequently. This is the earliest trip I have found for him. 1907

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000583930

So this is the brother that Karoline Hansen was going to when she left in 1909. He lists his final destinaton as Dubuc, Saskatchewan, Canada, same place as Karoline was going.
