In the remark column is said that the baptism is recorded with number in the records for Hamar parish. Since Karl Adolf was born out of wedlock, it is said that Hagen Ludvig and Amalie Hansine were preparing for marriage which took place July 4 1897.

Hi

Nice! Mother and daughter both baptized a child in the same church the same year. They also lived at the same place: Sagatuneie.

Wilhelm Hansen b 20 Mar 1894 living in Rockford, Illinois WWI draft reg :
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K66M-93V

His death record as John W Hansen:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV9J-C2XV

Wilhelm's birthplace recorded in son's birth record transcript as
Gjerdrinn Norway:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N773-R9B

So this wife Marguerite or Margaret she was with him at least through 1940 census. Dorothy might be another wife or she might have had a first and middle name. At the time of death John was divorced.

As it seems to often happen in old newspapers, lots of typos. There are two other marriage listings for Carl Arneson and Maeta Hansen in which she is listed as Mrs. and her age as 48. Both were published on Wed 9 Oct 1915 .

Carl Arneson dies in 1918 and his obit in Rockford Republic and the Rockford Morning Star says he is survived by his widow (who is not named) and 12 stepchildren. He died at home 1510 Seventh Avenue in Rockford but he was working at Camp Dodge. He died of pneumonia.

Here is a link to the FAG index at familysearch for Carl:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVGK-NQ4K

A Carl Arneson was reported in the newspapers as also seeking appeal of his draft status because of his dependent wife. His first appeal was denied. Camp Dodge was an entering the service station for many WWI draftees, so I suppose that is why he was listed as being there.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVGK-NQ4K

The home address 1510 Seventh Avenue also figures in the Hansen family story. Also from newspapers

29 Mar 1919 Morning Star C.W. Hansen of 1510 Seventh St
accused of forging check

30 Aug 1919 Rockford Republic pg 2 Two brothers Alexander and Walter Hanson living at 1510 Seventh Avenue, aged 20 and 25 were identified and admitted to stealing clothing from the National Clothing store by deception but would make restitution, bond of $500 was paid.

10 Mar 1920 (paper name neglected in my notes) William Hansen and his brother Alex of 1510 Seventh Ave were reported to have broken the diphtheria quarantine. William was assessed $5 + cost

Mar 1920 (paper name and full date neglected in my notes) Alex Hansen of 1510 Seventh Ave has contracted scarlet fever and is the fifth family member to suffer this recently

2 June 1921 Rockford Republic pg 12 Sues for Divorce is the headline, Gladys Hansen of 1510 Seventh Ave is suing Gust C Hansen for divorce on grounds of desertion. They married in Rockford on 13 Jan 1918 and he left her in April 1920. She is asking for custody and support of the couple's 2 year old daughter Rosemary.

1510 Seventh Ave also figures in several classified ads, during June 1921 there is an ad for taking in washing at this address and in 1924 is advertised as a 7 room house to rent. A Joe Magin is identified as the contact for renting the place he also figured in the estate of Carl Arneson

Matea as Maeta Arneson is named administrix of the estate of Carl Arneson on 16 July 1919 reported in the Morning Star 1 Aug 1919 pg 9.

In several postings (one of which was in the Daily Register-Gazette published in Rockford, 16 Nov 1921, pg 14 under the headline of Special Master in Chancery's sale of Real Estate) of the sale of a property (no address is given but the full legal description is several paragraphs long and is stated to be within the city of Rockford) Esther Johnson is complainant vs Maeta Arneson, C.J. Lundquist, Joe Magin, Maeta Arneson administrix of the estate of Carl Arneson, deceased and unknown heirs of Carl Arneson, deceased.

Apparently Charles/ Carl, Carl Waldemar, Walter, Chas Hansen is the same son who has some anger issues. He was named Carl and Charles in the same article. From Rockford Republic, Thursday 23 July 1908 pg 3 col 4:

"Carl Hansen Fined $25
Young man who was in police court yesterday for riding bicycle on walk fined this morning for disorderly conduct, assault and battery

Charles Hansen of 1629 Fifteenth Ave, who was fined $5 and costs yesterday morning for riding a bicycle on a sidewalk in the Southeast End was again in court this morning charged with disorderly conduct, assault and battery. He was assessed a fine of $25 with costs of $2.60.

Hansen has been working in the country but has the impression that household affairs at his mother's home on Fifteenth avenue will not get along right unless he comes in frequently and adjusts them.

Yesterday morning when he came in from the country, a box had been left on the sidewalk in front of the house and he ran into it. He immediately attacked his younger brother, whom he accused with placing the box on the sidewalk purposely to hinder him from riding the bicycle on the sidewalk. A married sister interferred and Charles attacked her with vile language making the threat that if she interferred she would get something she wouldn't like. About this time Harold Seversen, the brother-in-law who was repairing garden hose nearby, stepped into the fracas and walloped young Hansen across the cheek with a chunk of hose. The two men then indulged in a joyful fistic encounter. The arrest followed with subsequent fine..."

Or maybe he was hungry?

From Daily Register-Gazette at Rockford, Friday 20 Dec 1907 pg 1, col 7
"It was a sorry day for Carl Hansen when he invaded the Andrew Johnson grocery on Fourteenth avenue and ordered a bill of goods footing up to several dollars in value and representing that they were to be paid for later on the strength of his having employment at the Greenlee plant and had money coming Saturday night.

Grocer Johnson learned that the young man had willfully lied to him and secured a warrant for the lad's arrest. Hansen was taken into custody Thursday afternoon and this morning was held to await grand jury action in bonds of $50. Being unable to furnish a bond he went to county jail."

Other news articles mention the dollar amount of the goods received was $6 and that this was the second time Carl had done this. The prior time was for a pair of shoes. Obviously if you don't have $6 for groceries you don't have $50 for a bond.

Here is the family living with Matea in the 1920 census:

Martha Hanson Head F 60 Norway
Emil Hanson Son M 22 Norway
Harriett Hanson Daughter F 18 Norway
Aleck Hanson Son M 16 Norway
Charles Hanson Son M 30 Norway
Bergetta Hanson Daughter-in-law F 30 Norway
Joseph Hanson Grandson M 9 Illinois
Arthur Hanson Grandson M 4 Illinois
Henry Hanson Grandson M 0 Wisconsin

Citing this Record

"United States Census, 1920," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MJZ6-GDR : 14 December 2015), Bergetta Hanson in household of Martha Hanson, Rockford Ward 8, Winnebago, Illinois, United States; citing sheet 20A, NARA microfilm publication T625 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,820,417.

I haven't had any success finding Charles and his family after this except the middle son Arthur who lived with his uncle Harold at least by 1927 and he is found with Harold in the 1930 census.

jkmarler, you are coming up with so much information from the newspapers! I think I tried genealogybank before and couldn't find anything on my grandfather, and since he was a career criminal in NY/NJ I would think there would be many articles available! Are there any techniques to using that site that you can share that might help me find articles?

Many thanks!
Nancy

The best site for New York newspapers would be found by googling "old fulton history" it's a really quirky site but most likely to help you find titles.

I'm amazed that there are at least 3 newspapers functioning in Rockford Illinois in the early 20th century.

Always go back as most newspaper sites are adding pages. For instance Chronicling America is a free site with over 11 million pages of United States papers.

Typos happen so always try other spellings of names, let alone that a career criminal might have an alias

Always look for siblings and cousins, their family story might fill in details lacking in yours.

Harald Hansen's death record transcribed:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NQ9R-1MD

His obit mentions that he is survived by a stepson named Bjarne Svensen. I think this is the stepson:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/kb/dp/person/pd00000001549789

Living with his grandparents as Kristiansen in 1900 in Norway:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01037121000655

This may Bjarne coming to US:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000377546

In the 1910 Norwegian census aunty Karoline Kristiansen gets named as mother to all the grandchildren in the household but Olaug is also named as a child of Julia in Julia Hansen's obit:surviving sister of Bjarne Svensen.

Karoline is Olaug Katinkas mother, see #26.
Julie Pouline is Bjarne Marinius mother, see #3.

Karoline is Kirstens mother, see #106, This being her 3rd child born out of wedlock, she still says this was her "1st Leiermaal".

Well that is curious. I was incorrect to say that Olaug was mentioned as Julie's surviving daughter in Julie's obit. She wasnot mentioned in Julie's obit. She was mentioned as a surviving sister of Bjarne Svensen in his obit. Makes me wonder if there is more to the story....

After talking with an older family member, she said that Harold's wife Julie had a child out of wedlock in Norway and left him behind when she came to America. There does seem to be more to this story! I'm doing my best to read these records as you folks share them with me, but it is a slow process. Thank you again for all you've done to help fill in this family history.

Both Julie and Marie were survived by another sister who also came to America. According to her obituary published in Morning Star in Rockford Illinois on 5 Nov 1969 pg 8 col 7. Kristine Kristiansen was born 6 Sept 1884 in Drammen Norway to M/M Otto Kristiansen. She died in Beloit Wisc on 4 Nov 1969. Says she had lived 45 years in Rockford, Illinois.
