Seeking for information about Guri Johnsdatter, who was said to have been born about 1857-1859 to John Jensen and Randi Olsdatter in Al, Buskerud, Norway. They may have lived at the Qvaumshaugen Farm. I have not been able to locate a birth record for her. I believe she came to the United States sometime about 1883. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In Folk og Fortid I Hol Volume III pg 897 and 903, Guri and her family are covered. Unlike all the other children in the family she has only a year given for her birth while the rest have full dates.

I looked for her in the birth / baptisms for Hol and didn't find her, also looked for a confirmation 1873 to 1876 and a vaccination record from 1858-1864 also didn't find her.

The book goes on to say that she left a year after her younger brother Tomas Jonsen who left in 1881, so 1882 and that she married in U.S. to Ola Asgrimsen Rud another person from Hol who also came to US in 1881.

This lack of record is very perplexing. I will check to see if she is listed in her mother's dødfallsprotokol.

Guri is #10 in the list from 1887 dødfallsprotokol of her mother. The writing is a bit crabbed. It says she is married to Lars Knudsen Haugen and is in America.

Doesn't help with a birthdate for her, sorry.

Thank you both so much for your help. I would be very interested in seeing what else that book says about Guri's family. She has long been a mystery for us, and we're finally starting to fill in some of the gaps. Thanks again for your efforts.

I located three possibilities for Guri's first husband, Lars Knudsen, from Al.

1) b. 25 Feb 1862 to Knud Olsen and Ragnild Olsdtr, lived at Hagen, Rotebakke.
2) b. 3 Apr 1862 to Knud Larsen and Ingeborg Iversdtr. lived at Sletto sondre.
3) b. 12 Jan `863 to Knud Larsen and Haldis Tollefsdtr. lived at Houg Odegaarden.

Is there a way to determine if one of these was married to Guri and ended up in North Dakota. Family lore suggest he was born in 1862/63 and that he died in either 1887 or 1891 from drowning in a river. In 1893 Guri married Ole Aasgrimsen Ruud.

Guri Johnsdatter, Kvamshougen was confirmated May 31 1874, see #48.
Her parents were John Jensen and Randi Olsdatter.
It says she was born Sept 27 1858 and baptized Oct 24 1858.

To find out more about Guri's first husband Lars, you'll need to start with what is known from American records and descendant family lore. When, where did Guri and Lars marry? We can search Norway or search USA for that record. Their marriage record may tell his parents' names. Where did they live? Did they have children? These questions can be researched but you'll jumpstart the process by telling as much as you can.

Is there a reason you searched for a Lars in Guri's home turf?

From the probates for Guri's parents, she married Lars before 1886.

A Find-a-Grave memorial to Guri is located in Nelson county, North Dakota. Ola Asgrimson Ruud is buried same cemetery. link

2) b. 3 Apr 1862 to Knud Larsen and Ingeborg Iversdtr. lived at Sletto sondre.

This Lars is listed in Folk og Fortid I Hol Volume V, pg 171 as having gone to America in 1883 and drowned in US in 1887. And he is mentioned as being ug unmarried. And there is no source named for the information.

His death is not found in the Coroner's records of Grand Forks county database at Special Collection's website. Also so far have not found his drowning mentioned in the Grand Forks Herald but will continue to look.

Of the 15 children in Knud Larsen's and Ingeborg Iversdtr's family, 13 came to US. They lived on søre Sletto then came to Haugen (Jakobshaugen) and that is the farm they left from. Many, many from this Haugen farm came to US, first to Primrose in Wisconsin, then to Blooming Prairie in Minnesota and then to Manvel-Mekinock in Grand Forks county, North Dakota.

The locations mentioned for the immigrants are:
Sigrid Knutsdatter came as widow with 4 children no location
Lars Knutson as before no location
Sissel Knutsdatter married Aslak Skordal lived in Minnesota no children
Ivar Knutson farmed near Canby, Minnesota married 2 times
Johannes Knutson m Birgit Sumbrei lived near Minnewaukan, North Dakota (this couple were friends of my great grandmother)
Ingeborg Knutsdatter m Ellef Ellefson and farmed near Canby, Minnesota 10 children
Anne Knutsdatter m Charley Lantz, 3 children
Marita Knutsdatter married Karl Pederson and lived in Estevan, Sask. 4 children
Knut Knutson married Kari Jacobson 3 children lived Appleton, Minnesota
Andres Knutson an undertaker m. Clara Hanson, resident of Walhalla, North Dakota
Lars Knutson b 1880 married Minnie Olson lived near Boyd, Minnesota
Margit Knutsdatter unmarried d in Uruguay, South America
Birgit Knutsdatter m Arnold Dahl lived in Watson, Minnesota then Dawson, Minnesota 13 children

Here is Lars Knudson leaving in 1883 headed to Montevideo, Minnesota:

We know very little about this family, but I will try to fill in some of the gaps. My 3rd great-grandmother was Louisa Gurine "Lesa" Haugen. She was said to be the daughter of Lars Haugen and Guri Johnsdatter, and was born on 27 Oct 1887 in Lind Township, near Northwood, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. I do not know if Lars and Guri married in Norway or in the United States. It has been said that Lars drowned when Lesa was very young. There was also an older brother named John Larson Haugen, who was born in 1885. In 1893, Guri married Ole Ruud and went on to have more children. Some sources have Guri's name prior to her marriage to Ole as "Guri Larson." I have not been able to find any record of Lars's death or mention of his drowning. Some family members say it happened as early as 1887, while others say it was in 1891.

The out migrating to US list in Folk og Fortid I Hol Volume II calls Lars ungkarl, bachelor when he left.

Ole Ruud who Guri married later was attending church in the Middle Grove Lutheran church near Manvel. Another church in that area was Ness at Mekinock.

Churches in Lind Township were Bethania which was established well after the earliest settlement. The church building itself has been disassembled and taken to the Decorah museum. It's possible that Lars and Guri attended one of the churches in Northwood.

Lars' brother Ivar is also on the Oslo police lists leaving the same day as Lars only Ivar is headed to Nicolett, Minnesota.

In the translated and transcribed minutes of Bethania Congregation there is an Ole Rude who is joining with a total of 8 in his family in January 1900. His name is on the list of those who join who have not belonged to the Northwood Congregation.

In 1900 Ole and Guri have 6 children with them (they've added Carl, Albert, Henry, and Paul) - family of 8:

Presumably there should be mention of the death of Lars in an ELCA church book in Lind township, or nearest church to the family ca 1887.
