Hello everyone,
We are seeking the help of those who frequent this forum to find someone who has escaped our efforts to locate and we would appreciate any help from those of you who are much more experienced and knowledgeable in this.
We are looking for our great grandfather who was named John J. Haugen.
He is buried in Kensal, North Dakota. The headstone says 1878-1912.
It is related through family that he was born in Norway. However we cannot find any naturalization records in North Dakota to search for potential city of birth.
Records we have found include a record of his marriage to Mary (Marit) J. Engebretson on 1/27/1905, and census records as a "laborer" on a couple of farms in the North Dakota area.
He had 3 sons - Oscar Martin Haugen 1903-1963, Joseph Haugen - 1905-1950 Griggs County, North Dakota, Adolph Gerhardt Haugen 1907-1980
We have found John J. Haugen in other census and related records however we have been able to eliminate most of these as not part of our line as relatives are listed which are unknown to us.
John J. Haugen in 1902 @ Ellis Island is as close as we can come. Yet we can find nothing on him either.
Searching the Norwegian archives only is an abject lesson in futility as the language is a barrier that does not lend itself the magic of Google's translation capabilities as I suspect that many words used then may no longer be used.
Perhaps someone here has skills and access to records beyond what is available to the rest of us, or perhaps we have overlooked something.
In any case we could use some fresh eyes on this and or some direction of any kind would be appreciated.
We are adept at using the net and searching, however we believe that this is a genuine mystery I can be reached directly at my email address: linelock@comcast.net
Thanks in advance
Randy Haugen b. 1959 - Albuquerque, New Mexico

Suggestion for your great grand father: John Marius Johnsen Haugen b. 11.30.1878 Innvik in Sogn. Parents John Paulsen Haugen b. 1849 and Magnhild Andriane Johnsdatter b. 1850. See: https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/kb20070509660172
John Marius lived with his parent in 1891, but not in 1900.
Please tell me if this looks interesting, than I can look for more information. It should be possible to find when he left Norway. A John Johnsen Haugen left Oslo 05.05.1905 (age 27) for S. Dakota, but that do not match? Best regards Knut |

Looks like the boys were living with a North family in 1910. Is the lady listed as Mary J Hangen their mother and is she the niece of the Thomas O North.
1910
She is listed as a widow, was John J Haugen dead at that time?
It would appear that the North and Running families of Foster and Stutsman Counties in North Dakota are related to either Marit or John. Could you tell us if the North and Running families are related to wife Marit (Mary) or husband John J Haugen. |

Your right they were living with the North family which apparently was her Father or step father with a different last name.
My cousin has a partial, handwritten family tree in which that name is present, but the name was actually Bertha North.
Mary J. Hangen is the right person with wrong spelling of her last name which should read Mary J. Haugen. Looking at other census records her last name changes to Skretting, which is also known, but the spelling is again wrong.
The Running and North families are related but we are not sure how at this point. I think they were related through either Mary J. Hangen (Haugen) or Engebretson as her maiden name, or the North family |

The North's were related to Mary J. Hangen (should be Haugen) but not sure how. I'm suspecting they were related by marriage not blood.
I further suspect that the Running family is related but not sure how.

Perhaps Mary J Haugen married Torsten Skkretting since they were living at the same location in the 1910 Census and seem to be together in the 1940 Census with I presume one of the sons Adolph.
They also show up with the children in 1920 and 1930 Census.
1920
It may be only a coincidence but the village of Varhaug shows up several times while I was searching for information on these families. For example in this wedding record for Mary J Haugen and Torsten Skettring in Minneapolis, he is listed as being from Varhaug and Mary from Osterdalen. Varhaug is a village in Rogaland. One of the witnesses for the marriage is named Ole North.
Torstein T Skretting in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Records, 1826-1945 Name: Torstein T Skretting Gender: Male Event Type: Marriage Birth Place: Xamia, Norge Marriage Date: 7 Oct 1910 Marriage Place: Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Spouse: Marry J Hangen Church Name: Our Saviour's Lutheran Church Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Where I am going with this is sometimes the people in an area tend to be from the same location in Norway. So I am wondering if Varhaug is the origin of the Haugen name?? We shall see.
If this record is accurate then John J Haugen must have either been dead by the time of this marriage or at least divorced. |

You probably have this record but I will post it as it may help others in the search.
John J Hangen in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Records, 1826-1945 Name: John J Hangen [John J Haugen] Gender: Male Event Type: Marriage Birth Place: Rensel North Dakota, USA Marriage Date: 27 Jan 1905 Marriage Place: Valley City, North Dakota, USA Spouse: Mary Engebretson Church Name: First Church Location: Valley City, North Dakota
Witnesses are Inga Engebretsen and John O North
Record indicates birth for both is Rensel North Dakota, hard to say how accurate that is. I think that is a incorrect transcription and should be Kensal North Dakota |

Thank you, yes I do have this record.
Your right it should be Kensal not Rensal.
Your hunch is a good one and may lead us to more information.
Thanks again for your insight and expertise, and I'm looking forward to learning from you guys,
Randy

If I have the right record, he is transcribed simply as John Haugen, But the original record has him as John Johnson Haugen age 21 traveling with Ole Johnson Haugen age 25 going to Canton South Dakota to uncle N. Ekle. He is listed as being fro Lom.

Wondering if he was from Lom, how does that square with John Marius Johnsen Haugen from Innvik? or is Innvik also known as Lom?
Lost in Norway!

It does not square at all. Innvik and Lom are in two different parts of Norway.
We are still missing some of the connections we need to figure this out.
Here are the two emigration records for John and Ole Haugen leaving in 1898. Do they fit with the Ellis Island record you found.

Let me know how I might be able to help.
Obviously, I have not complete conveyed everything that I have uncovered as that would be a long post, but you guys are already where I was and you've only been on it a day!
You guys are amazing!
I sent a request to Griggs County in North Dakota for a John Johnsen Haugen immigration papers and they sent me back the images below. Turns out that John Johnsen Haugen was born in 1853 . . . obviously not our guy!

I cannot access the Ellis Island record that you referenced so could you post more of it. What does it say exactly, does it give a exact date of arrival?? |
