It is likely Tolgen, a parish located in Hedmark County. Also called Tolga.

This is the record you are looking at.

John J Haugen
in the New York, Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: John J Haugen
Arrival Date: 27 Mar 1902
Birth Date: abt 1883
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/ Nationality: Norwegian
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: Oceanic

Here is the emigration record for Joh Jons. Haugen from 1902. He is listed as being from Tolgen.

John J Haugen

The person directly above John J Haugen is listed as Esten Vingelen. also from Tolgen.

Vingelen is a sub-parish in Tolgen parish, listed as Vingelen i Tolgen in the 1900 Norwegian Census.

He is listed as Esten Ols. Vindgelen in the Digitalarkivet Emigration Record

Esten

Here is a the full emigration page for John J Haugen, listed here as Jon Jons.Haugen and Esten Ols. Vindgelen both from Tolgen.

Emigration

Perhaps one of the Norwegian posters can explain the naming of Toglen or Tolga and what time frame each was used as the parish name. But from another poster on RootsWeb I found this.

"Tolgen Hedemarkens Amt, is today Tolga, Hedmark."

I think that the spelling Tjolgen in your document is a misspelling of the word Tolgen done by the transcriber from the original document.

John J. from Lom, came to USA in 1898 and is 21 yrs old, according to the manifest.

- His parents, according to the link below are: Jon Torgerson & Berit Amundsdatter

https://digitalarkivet.no/en/search/persons?s=Jon+Johnsen+Haugen&event_year_from=&event_year_to=&event_date=

John J. from "Tjolgen" came to USA in 1902 and is 19 yrs old according to the manifest, and his parents are:

Jon Torgerson & Berit Amundsdatter

In summary, unless I'm confused, John J. from Lom & John J. from Tjolgen, have the same parents, which means they are the same guy.

What am I missing guys ? ?

Obviously there could be a myriad of reasons for leaving, coming back, using a different DOB, etc.

The answer is John from Lom and Jon from Tolgen do not have the same parents. In the links to baptism for John from Lom, his parents are John Hansen Andvorhaugen and Marit Olsdatter.

Can someone post a link to the digital record of John Johnsen Haugen's birth in Lom, in 1877 as I cannot seem to find it outside of the baptism record already posted.

When I search for Haugen, with no first name, in Lom, between 1870-1885, I don't see any John Johnsen Haugen.

???

Please explain what I'm doing wrong.

Not every parish, nor every moment of records from every parish are represented in any searchable database at either the Digitalarkivet or familysearch.org. Lom may be one of those not findable in the transcribed searchable records because it hasn't been transcribed or fully transcribed. So you are going to have to get your feet wet in the handwritten, Norwegian language original records by browsing, looking for events for each family member.

The baptismal record 1877 in Lom previously given includes the birth information. You are already looking at the birth record for that John Johnsen.
