Nice work everyone!

Perhaps passenger records from Norway to Liverpool/Hull would uncover John Marius leaving Norway to Liverpool, and then or course finding the passenger record from London/Hull to NYC.

Am I on the right path?

Jon Paulsen and Magnild Adriane Jonsdatter had twin daughters Anne Marie and Ingeborg Andrine Aug 3 1875, they both died before baptism at home were confirmed in church.
Jon and Magnild Andrine also had a son Jon Aug 3 1889, but he died Aug 4 same year.

The Ole J Haugen b 30 Aug 1873 died in Burleigh county, ND on 31 May 1945. He was listed as a resident of Kidder county.

In the WWI draft registration cards there is a Caroline Haugen listed as the nearest relative. Since target Ole was 1/2 of a set of twins maybe this Caroline might be the twin if she is not his wife?

She appears to be his spouse in the 1940 census. But it looks like Ole took a sentimental journey back to Norway:

Here Ole and family are in 1920:

Since John and Ole Haugen arrived in 1898 they should be in the 1900 US Census.

This is likely Ole living in Lincoln County, South Dakota

Ole 1900

And this is likely John Johnsen Haugen in the 1900 Census, also in Lincoln County South Dakota. Arrival year is right and the birth month and year are spot on.

John 1900

Back to the John Marius Johnsen Haugen from Innvik, Sogn og Fjordane who was born in 1878.

There is a John Marius Johnsen Haugen who is listed in the death records for Innvik. He died in 1893. His birth year is given as 1879 but that is not far off. witness appears to be John Johnsen Haugen.

Would be nice if someone else takes a look at this record and see if they agree with me that this is likely the death record for the John Marius Johnsen Haugen of Innvik that we have considered a second candidate. This would explain his disappearance.

Thanks Einar, I think that leaves us with only one candidate for Randy's ancestor. That is John Johnsen Haugen born May 12, 1877 in Lom, Oppland

NEW INFORMATION

We have been going on the information presented to us on his headstone with a death date of 1912, however . . . .

I just got off the phone with an elderly lady who was the daughter of one of John J. Haugen, son Adolph.

She has a book that was completed by another family member which indicates that John died in 02/01/1909 in Foster county, North Dakota

Searching North Dakota State University Archives shows a John J. Haugen who died in 1909, and that he was born in 1882, in Norway.

She said that her grandmother (John J. Haugen) first wife, Mary J. Haugen (Engebretson/Skretting) said that she wasn't sure when John J. was born or when he died.

This, along with the knowledge of John Marius dying in 1893 points to John J. from 1877 uncovered by the very knowledgeable individuals from this forum.

Is there any other John J. Haugens' born in Norway from 1870 - 1890 ???

If all goes well, here is a link to the Robinson, North Dakota history book story about Mr. and Mrs. Ole Haugen:

http://digitalhorizonsonline.org/digital/collection/ndsl-books/id/7395/rec/15

Also this later 1986 edition tells how Caroline and Ole met (he came from "Long in Gudbransdal":
http://digitalhorizonsonline.org/digital/collection/ndsl-books/id/34646

Of course there is no Long in Gudbransdal but there is a Lom, right?

Thank you for the link on Ole Haugen.

They were married just about the time my Grandfather, Oscar Haugen 1903-1963 was born.

With the amazing help of you guys it was discovered that John Marius Johnsen Haugen died in 1893 so clearly that was not the guy.

However, the John J. Haugen born in 1877 from Lom, may hold some promise, yet I cannot seem to retrace your guys searches on Norway National Archives and find John J. Haugen, born in 1877.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Randy Haugen

If you have trouble finding the baptism record this may be that the number of the record should be 59 (the number given earlier was 5), here you go #59.

Sorry Randy, Einar is correct. In the first post of the baptism record for John J Haugen born May 12, 1877 shown on page 2 I did put in the correct record number of 59. However when I repeated it on page 3 I left offf the 9 in my haste to get it reposted. The correct record number is #59.

In an effort to eliminate the John J. Haugen of 1902 in the Ellis Island record below, can anyone tell me where "Tjolgen" is?

Is that in Norway?

Thanks in advance,

Randy
