Nice map of that part of Norway!
It is possible that Britta "Bessie" and Lars already had some connection in Norway. We had assumed that they had met in South Dakota.
She came in 1900. Lars came in 1903.

Great to see info on her brothers who came later.

Although the distance between the two farms are "only" a 2.5 hrs drive today, it was probably a 2 day trip with a steamboat in those days.

It's very unlikely that they've met in Norway. These 2 areas had no natural common connection, and people at that time traveled very little.

In Norway, map distances are not always what they seem. Thanks for the clarification.

A map from 1896 shows the "problem"; the area is full of fjord arms and obstacles, so the only way to travel between the two farms is by boat.
And if, in a rare case, they were to embark on such a boat trip, they would rather go to a big city like Bergen.

There are a number of people leaving Bergen on May 1st 1900.
The ones you mention have all booked through the agency Thingvalla, meaning they had to take a feeder ship to Kristiansand, where they boarded the Hekla, which was en route Oslo-Kristiansand-New York.
The others leaving Bergen on that date took a feeder ship to England, where they boarded the cross-Atlantic steamer.

So the common part Jensine Petrine Gjærde have with your Britha is that she boarded the Hekla at the same time in Kristiansand. The ship was already loaded with passengers from Oslo. Jensine, Johannes and Britha are from different parts of Norway, and their destination is different, so I don't think they've met before. But maybe a traveling companion, since they had met already in Bergen harbour...

Great explanation of how the system worked.
If Britta was traveling alone from her community, what a courageous 17-year old!

Britta's brothers emigrated after her. Olav/Ole in 1905 came to her in SD. Jens/James came about 1914.

Wondering about Britta's connection in South Dakota when she came.

Britha's mother Kari Elisabet Brynjulfsdatter Seim had 9 siblings that emigrated to America, so there were a couple of uncles and aunts to choose between...
Synneva, Olav, Brita, Jon, Helena, Hallstein, Håvard, Nils, Brynjulv

It looks like she's headed to "B. Seim" in S.Dak?
Possibly uncle Brynjulf Brynjulfsen Seim (b. 1880) emigration on 16 Mar 1896.

Looks like Betsy Seim made it just in time for the 1900-census... she is in the household of Hans Eggin in Foxton, Merton & Pleasant Townships Vienna village, Clark, South Dakota

Lots of uncles and aunts to choose from. Couldn't make out the B.Seim on the manifest. So thank you for that.

I was wondering if she made the 1900 SD Census - and you found her !!

Marriage record for Britha's parents - Kari and Olav - lists his father as Samson Olsen.
In the Granvin book, are parents there of Olav Samsonson 1859-1931?

No, Samson Olsen is not mentioned in the Granvin book.
Ole/Olav Samsonson is born in Voss, so it's likely Samson Olsen was from that township.

Her is your Ole living with his single, unmarried mother in 1865: https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01038235003119

A little funfact:
i Britha Seim (1882-)
ii her mother: Kari Elisabeth Brynjulvsdatter Seim (1865-1939)
iii her mother: Eli Olavsdatter Lægreid (1833-1868)
iv her father: Ola Funnen (1805-1881)

"Ola Funnen" means "Ola the Found", and he was found as a child somewhere in the eastern part of Norway, swept in silk and with some cash... Good luck in tracing that ancestry!

Whereever did you find the "funfact" about Ola Funnen. That is every genealogists nightmare! And probably chasing after a farm named "Funnen" if not as knowledgeable as you!

So Samson Olsen and Britha were not married.

Wonder what birth record shows for Ole?

The "funfact" about Ola Funnen is from the Granvin book snapshot above.
Although the book says he was born 1805, this must be him in census-1865.
https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01038234000661

Farm is Legreid, where Britha's g.mother was from.
Eidfjord farm history book says it was people from Lægreid farm that found him.
He himself thought that he had once seen his mother, a nice lady who stood and looked at him in such a strange way that he never forgot it

Census-1875 says this about Ole Funden: Cotter with land and partly supported by the poor relief fund. Found quite weak. Birthyear unknown.

Didn't realize you had already posted the "funfact" from the Granvin book. Just needed translating. Thanks.

Amazing story about Ola Funnen. Wrapped in silk?
Book says he was found in Austlandet. Looks like Lægreid farm is in Eidfjord.
How far between these 2 places?

Ole's wife in 1865 is Britha Halstensdatter .
Would she be mother of Eli?
