I sent you two emails Bethany, to give you a heads up that you had replies in your thread.

Question: Wondering what is the source for the statement that Jurgen/John 1869-1959 was born in New Orleans? Where did you hear that or read it?

I looked at that one too lyndal40. I do like it because the mother is Caroline, and Jurgen/John's first daughter is Carrie.
Caroline's birthplace is given as Bremen [Germany]
A little hard to know what to make of the two boys George and John, and how that fits with the person we know as Jurgen/John.

Here is the citation in the newspaper index at the New Orleans Public Library site of a George E. Brinkman, about the right age as target:

I wonder why Theo. and John spell their last names differently? They likely had the same mother and I would think the same father.

If we could find them in 1870 Census we might see for sure if John Johnson was born in Denmark and how he spelled his name.

Well here they are in 1870 but now it lists him as being born in Ireland, I guess the best thing we have going for us is that this family has always lived in Ward 8. Listed as a carpenter. Caroline is also listed as being born in Ireland.

Certainly seems to be the same family as the 1880 and 1900. Curious about the nationalities problem. George who married in 1912 age 47 would have been born ca 1865 - just to say it out loud, he's the George age 5 in 1870. This could be it. Pursuing it a bit more makes this family more credible. Good finds lyndal40!

John vs Jurgen issue: Naming custom is the first child in the "new" marriage is named to memorialize the deceased spouse. Was Caroline's first husband George / Jurgen?

Yes I think this family is the best candidate. Total proof that is going to be a very difficult task.

By the by, John the elder is listed as being born in Ireland in 1870, so is the family above them named O'Hara
John the elder is listed as being born in Denmark in 1880.
The father of the children is listed in 1900 as being born in Germany, by that time John the elder is dead. Not a bad fit to the death record found by the OP.

No where in the census is John the elder listed as being born in Norway.

Agreed. The fact that George has a different father goes a long way toward explaining the Jurgen/John issue.

The whole "Jurgen/John" thing was odd from the beginning, since Jurgen is usually Anglicized to George. Why Anglicize to John? The portrait of the family painted by these records supplies possible reasons, strengthening the case for this candidate family. Could be he prefers not to Anglicize to George - when he has a half-brother George.

Recap: Source for "father born in Norway" is the 1920 and 1930 census for son Jurgen/John, and no other source to date.

Wanted: 1900 census for Jurgen/John (I don't think it's posted), and see if it says he's born Dec 1868. And what it says about father's birthplace also of interest.

So now the death record for the candidate father first proposed hy the OP is certainly needed. Death might not be registered. Cemetery record might help.
