The death would have had to have been after the census in 1880 but there is another son named August born abt 1882 so perhaps they have supposed him to die in 1880.

Some people will enter a death as "After" such and such. Maybe here it is after 1880, since that is the last time John Johnson was spotted. The program doesn't pick up the word after in the summary.

I guess we just needed a little faith that those Johnsons in the 1870 and 1880 census would be able to transform themselves into Johannsens! No wonder it was hard for you, Bethany, to find them.

Sure lookin' like the parents of "your" Jurgen/John Johannsen are John (or Johannes) Johnson (or Johanessen) and Caroline Krauser. His siblings would be half-brother George Brinkman, Theodore Johnson, Mary Johannsen (Caballero), and August Johnson (or Johannsen), as found in the census records and obituaries posted.

DEATH as indexed on Ancestry.com
New Orleans, Louisiana, Death Records Index
NAME: John Johannsen <------------------------- Bethany, can you order this death record?
Year: 1882

and can you order this marriage record? (Caroline married John under her married name from her first marriage)

Caroline Brinkman married John Johnson 29 February 1868 in New Orleans LA (Justice of the Peace Marriage Index, call number VEE 678, page 172)
