And I'm guessing a 'jernbanearbeider' of 1870's Norway would necessarily indicate someone who would move around much, laying tracks and such.

Howzabout this one? Johan Gustav Alfred born 10.03.1878 to Anders Petter Johanson (dob 25.03.1850 Sverige), jernbanearbeider. Baptism 14.04.1878 Eigersund. That's surely a candidate. Might be the same fellow as line 5 of your link to railroad workers, from Daisland but born 1849.

A candidate to be the father of Johan Gustav Alfred (Sirevaag)
in 1900 census - census says he's born in Bråttensby:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037263000353

A second census listing in 1900 for seemingly same Anders:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037259000541

Johan Sirevaag in 1910 census
born 10.03.1878
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036615036805

Probably same Johan in 1900:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037252023967

Borås is further south than traditional Dalsland:
http://www.jfredpeterson.com/sweden/geography.htm

Both are within Vastra Gotaland:

Gazooks (an old way of saying 'Golly Gee', which is an old way of saying today's 'OMG')!
You've lost me a mite here. I take it y'all are suggesting little Johan took his family stead as a surname, but are we then thinking this may well be the issue of my Double-Great GrandPappy Anders?
The history may fit. My Norwegian choo-choo train reading indicates the Christiania to Drammen line was completed in 1872 (Great-Grandad Christian's birth year), but geography fails me here. Was sleepy Faaberg near to the workings on that?
And then the Egersund to Stavanger railway opened n 1878, and the Oestfold to Halden in 1879, roundabout the time of Johan Gustav's appearance.
Does possible work on either of those lines qualify the railroad worker Anders Petter for being there?

Good idea to sort out the railroad work. But we haven't got a match on birth place in Sweden. Sometimes the same place appears in two records but stated a different way (Sel, Gudbrandsdalen), but that doesn't seem to be the case, after poking at the candidate Anders a bit.

That said, Bråttensby is pretty close to Boraas...

I don't think Johan Gustv Alfred's father Anders Peter Johanson can be ruled out yet.

Re. Sirevaag surname, well that 1910 census shows a Johan born 10.03.1878 in Ogna sign, Eigersund. Confirmation record gives his birth place as Sirevaag. A full transcription of the birth record you found is not posted. Churchbook can be checked, marriage checked, etc. to confirm it is same Johan.

Birth of Johan Gustav Alfred
10.03.1878
Ogna in Eigersund
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070102330039.jpg

Marriage of Anders Petter and Ingeborg
Ogna in Eigersund
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070102330222.jpg

If someone would read and transcribe it, great. I'll try:
Anders birth date ---
Birth place Bråttensby?
Father Johannes Andersson?

Cool, Jane C. Love it. Has anybody besides me and five or six dozen others ever told you that you guys are amazing?
I wish I could make out the list of Fadder (godparents, I take it, or witnesses). It stands to some small reason that Anders' railway cronies would sometimes make up that band, and if we have any matches between Johan Gustav's attendees and the 1870-1872 births in Faaberg and Modum (by Gina and Kristine), that'd be very strong.

Great idea re godparents. Also the co-workers in 1900. Also the godparents at births of the other children by Ingeborg.

The 1900 census with Ingeborg and children says he's working at Heskestad:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01037259000541

Bråttensby is very tiny I think. I wonder if Boraas could be named as being a larger place nearby. Swedish records should reveal the story...

I'll get on it, but right now my children (Anders' - whoever he is - great-great-great grandkids) are doing such important Internetting as exchanging selfies and finding cute kitten videos, taking much of my bandwidth with them.
But it stands to reason there was more issue of Anders. The infernal photo album that has driven me to this happy madness includes one very large picture of a moustachioed fellow (circa 28 years old), with the simple note : 'En half-bror av far's' (a half-brother of Dad's - i.e. Kristian Andersen b1872). I always assumed that meant U.S bound Otto b1871 (by Kristine), but the boys grew up together, so you think he'd merit a name or - at the very least - a singular 'Dad's half-brother'.

We can forget Dalsland. That was birth place of an Anders Peter Johanson as found in the 1875 census. BUT this must be our candidate in 1875:
Anders Peter Johanson
born 1851 in Bråtensby, Sweden
living in Ogna in Eigersund
occupation Jernbanearbejder

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01052242004072

Dalsland does not come into it. This recognition (albeit slow to dawn) strengthens the candidate, father of Johan Gustav Alfred born 1878.

Hmmm.
The kiddies have put down IPads and picked up knives and forks. I've a minute.
Long shot thought: didn't jkmarler post some pages ago that Julie Andersen b1870 of Anders and Gina arrived NYC 1910 heading to the home of Gust...(illegible) in Grand Rapids, Michigan?
Could we find our Johan GUSTAV having emigrated circa 1902, and then inviting a half-sister to America? That'd put a beautiful bow to the whole thing.
(I know, I know....I'm freeloading......)
